Trouble with 1998 2 Stroke Yamaha 40hp

Hey,

This is my first post here (just bought used yamaha) but all the googling I did directed me here, so here it goes. I recently purchased a used 1544 Cajun Special with a 1998 Yamaha 40hp with remote controls. The engine runs very smooth (much more so than the evinrude I had before). However, sometimes after running on plane for a couple minutes, the engine begins to lose power gradually. It is a smooth transition. There is no sudden slow down or anything like that. It does this pretty consistently. Every once in a while though, the engine will run, say, all the way back to the landing, no problem. I dont have a tach on the boat, but I never run all the way open. The tell tale is spitting water and the overheat alarm does not go off. When this happens, I can throttle down to idel for a second and then gun it again and it takes off. Also, sometimes after I have had it off for awhile fishing (not long enough to seem to need a cold start), when I start the motor, it idels high for a second, drops down (seems normal) but then it does something which Ive never had happend before. A (hard to explain) sort of spitting or hissing (short and cutoff, almost like a softer doe snort) happens a couple times and the engine dies. The noise seems to be coming from the upper exhaust port. This will happen several times, but I can get it too go by very quickly putting it in gear (forward idle not enough, have to go further). A couple times it has made the noise that concerns me most after doing this acouple times. It spits out of the exhaust a couple times like explained above, and then it will make a high pitched noise and immediately die. The noise is kinda like an air horn, but not as loud and a tad more shrill. From what I have read, it seems like a fuel pressure or carb issue, but the noises are what concerns me, hence the post. You guys seem to be the most recommeded for yamaha issues, so any insight you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

sounds like a lean sneeze.
need to pull and clean carbs

Would that cause the slow loss of power as well, or is there likely a fuel delivery issue (sucking air or something) also. Thanks for the speedy reply. I will repost the results.

If there is water or trash in the carbs it could plug a jet from time to time.
But it is never the wrong time to check the pump pressure and vacuum and also for sucking air

OK. I believe I have solved the 'lean sneeze' issue. I changed the fuel hose and bulb (bulb felt kinda funny when pumped and fittings werent real tight anymore) and adjusted the idle speed to slightly higher than it was. Seemed better. Also, on the carbs, there are some adjustment screws on the upper left side (facing engine from control side) of each. I dont know what exactly they adjust without taking the carbs apart (never fooled with any carbs more complex than mowers), but two were set identically and the third (bottom carb) was not. I set it to match the other two (little less than 1/2 turn) and now the issue seems to have gone away. Have not had a chance to run a long ways yet, so dont know if any of this may have helped the loss of power while running.

my 1999 c40tlrx calls for 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated for the pilot mix adjustment screws.

Pick up a Yamaha service manual for your motor and do a good check out on it so you know what kind of shape it is in. Compression, spark, timing, idle RPM, etc to make sure it is in specs.
Testing the fuel supply system with a pressure/ vacuum gauge is not hard and gives you the info about the fuel supply condition.
cleaning the carbs is not that big of deal as long as you pay attention to what you are doing and don't mix up parts from different carbs, at least you will know if there is trash or water in the bowls. Clean the filter screen on the motor and install a water /fuel separator filter to keep them clean.
