I am in the process of converting a 85' Bass Tracker from tiller to remote, and just finished fabricating the console. In the process i am also installing gauges (tach, speedo and trim). My problem is that I am not sure if my 1998 Mercury 40ELPTO 3 cyl., serial #G673076, has a sending unit for a trim gauge. I know it has remote connectors for forward trim control, but have no idea if it has a trim sending unit. Any one out there have any idea?...

No sender on that engine. Put in a water pressure gauge. Far more useful. Merc dealers sell the kit which includes all the bits needs to run it all the way from the engine.

okay, here is where I give away my novice experience to boating, outboards and gauges.

Could I ask you to please explain the function and operation of a water pressure gauge.

Not a "novice experience" question. It's been asked before with varying answers. I have the gauge on my boat and am not sure what it's usefulness is.

A water pressure gauge indicates the water pressure in the engine block. As the block is an open system and water will flow out of the engine block at the exhaust, the gauge indicates how effective the water pump is. As the pump efficiency drops (with age or a plaky bag round the intakes :mad:) the water pressure in the block will also drop.

For engines with thermostats and a Poppet valves the gauge will indicate when the poppet opens, by dropping from about 15psi to about 7-10 psi (Depending on the engine), and also indicate the efficiency of the pump.

By knowing the characteristics of the water pressure when the impeller is new and in good condition you have an excellent indicator for the water pump. It will also indicate when the impeller is not working, a long way before the engine would get hot enough to sound the alarm.

Just as an indication of how important Merc thing knowing the water pressure is, all the Mercruiser stern drives MPIs have a water pressure sensor in the inlet hose to the engine, right by the power steering oil cooler, and if the engine management computer sensors a loss of water pressure it will sound the alarm (BIG TIME!!!) and reduce the available power from the engine, depending on the pressure loss, down to as low as 6% of maximum.

Re: Trying to figure out if 1998 40ELPTO has trim sending unit

Well, I found a NOS trim sending unit on EBAY and installed it on my 40 ELPTO. Trim gauge is now functional!!

Now if i can just figure out why I am not getting any water out the tell tale unless I have a hose hooked up (only ran it for a few seconds with no water coming out). Guy I bought it off of (Paul, owner of PK Marine, out of Bristol, RI) said he just gave it a full service too...
