I bought a boat that has an inline 6 cylinder Mercury motor on it and the plate with the serial number is no longer with the motor. the owner was a guy who picks up a lot of boats and motors and puts together packages and sells them. the motor has a 115HP hood on it but i can tell the decal is new and he told me the motor is actually 1977 140HP engine. looking at other websites i discovered that there was not a 140HP motor made in 1977. I would like to figure exactly what year and HP this motor is for reference on parts, repair, and the correct manual. where else can i look for numbers to identify the motor?

Look for a core plug at the top of the motor, the serial number is stamped into it.

Re: Trying to identify 6 cylinder Mercury

Try and provide as much info as possible to help narrow down the year.

Distributor ignition or not?

Single coil, or mutliple coils?

Color of accent banding on the cowling?

Anything else to describe it?

As for alternative S/N locations, depending on the year you may find it in different locations. On my 1971 4cyl Merc for example, it is stamped onto a bracket just above the distributor cap. Others, as mentioned by ENSIGN have a "quarter" sized medallion placed somewhere on the block.

Re: Trying to identify 6 cylinder Mercury

You seem to have narrowed it down. The last distributor motor was made 1/2 way thru 1979. so you have a 1978-1979 90-140HP motor, if the starter is original.

There should be a part number on the block. Look on the starboard side of the motor, 1/2 way up. Maybe you can match it up to the part numbers at crowleymarine.com
