I have a '81 Mercury 80HP engine..SN 2990066, red label engine. I am trying to remove the starter because I have been told the bendix is bad. What happens is sometimes the shaft does not always rise up to engage the flywheel or sticks in the flywheel. I have lubed the shaft to death and still no go...so off comes the starter. I have removed the metal piece that goes over the flywheel, the two bolts on top through the piece that the starter connects to...all wiring to the starter and the two nuts on the bottom of the starter. The starter is loose but not coming out....it almost looks like the whole front plate has to come out with the starter....any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

I just found out that the serial number is supposed to be 8 characters....I have looked on the identification plate between the screws that hold the engine to the t/t and it only has what I have above....how do I determine the last character? Also, how many bolts hold the bottom starter bracket on and does the bottom cowl have to come off? All is appreciated!!
