As the title states I'm trying to start a 73 Evinrude 65 for the first time in 8 years. It cranks over great and the plugs (new) are wet from fuel but it seems there is no spark. No sputter or stumble or pop, just cranks over and over. Any ideas? The engine ran fine when it was last used but it was parked in a garage and has sat untouched for about 8 years.

Thanks in advance!

You may have a bad Power pack, check all ground wires at the coils and (power pack ground) and then I would start pulling spark plugs and check each coil for fire/spark one at a time with a spark tester also your ignition switch or wire harness could be faulty, unplug main harness at motor Big Red Plug with metal clip and try pull starting it with a pull rope to rule out faulty ign/key switch and wire harness checking for spark at the same time, if engine starts up, plug main wire harness Big Red Plug back the way it was to kill engine provided the ign/key switch is in the OFF position. If you still don't get spark from any of the three coils my guess is either the Power Pack or timer base & sensor/trigger assembly under the flywheel is faulty and may need to be replaced.

Thanks for the reply, I will try all of this out.

I verified the there is no spark on any plug with a spark tester (not just the ol' screw driver trick ;)). All grounds check out fine as well. I haven't pulled the flywheel yet but one thing I did notice is that the power wire coming off the terminal block and going in to the rectifier is corroded and crispy. In fact some of the wire insulation flaked off when I pushed on it. I do still see 12V on that wire but its really the only thing on the engine that doesn't look immaculate. Would a faulty rectifier cause a no spark condition? I'm thrown a bit here because the engine ran good the last time it was used, this isn't a situation where it died and wouldn't start. Also its been sitting in a garage out of the elements since it was last ran.

looks like the rectifier is for recharging the battery so probably not the problem. I will test the stator next I guess and go from there.

Best thing to do in this situation is get an OEM factory service manual and go from there. If you're keeping the mtr it will help you out with future probs.

You can checkout the CDI troubleshooting guide in my signature. You will find the troubleshooting steps for your outboard on page 34.

The Black with Yellow wire going to Terminal 6 on the power pack is what kills the motor. Remote Control ground is probably routed to the fuse panel/block.

I finally got back to working on this boat and the very first thing in the CDI troubleshooting guide got me spark. I pulled the wire for the stop circuit from the power pack (position 6) and it fired right up. Now the question is what is the actual fix for this? It says to check the key switch, harness, ans shift switch but I guess I dont really know what I am looking for. I'll go dive into it and check back here if anyone has some advice.

Thanks again... super excited as this is my first boat!!

I would check all of the wiring connections to make sure they are clean and tight. It is nice to see you got her going.

Water should be exiting the two holes on the back of the motor about 6" below the rear hood latch.

Re: Trying to start 73 Evinrude 65hp Triumph for the first time in 8 years...

ok thanks. I'll take a look at that tomorrow. I let it idle for about ten minutes and gave it a bit of throttle for a few seconds and didn't notice any issues or excessive heat but I'm not sure if water was exiting those holes. The prop did spin up so I know the output shaft is turning and I'm sure I got the woodruff key in on the impeller. I think had I installed the impeller backwards it would have made an obvious noise and chewed it up pretty bad but its unlikely that I installed it wrong. The only thing that I'm really wondering is if there is an obstruction in the inlet but water does come out of the other ports.

I see there is a temp switch, I assume this thing will auto shut down when it over heats???

My first time out on the water:

in the driveway with the muffs on there is a little bit of water at those ports, not really peeing out just kinda wet is all. I checked the temp horn and it works but I cant be sure the switch does. I drove it around a bit went WOT for a few, after about 10 minutes I pulled the cowl off and didnt notice any heat coming off, I was able to hold my hand anywhere on the engine that I could access, right on the head etc. I stayed out for another hour cruising from a slow pace to wot and it seemed fine the whole time.

No, the Temp switch deactivates the choke if I remember correctly as OMC designed these motors to get you home on one leg if you will, no mater what is wrong with it. As far as Over Heating goes you should have an Audible High Temp Buzzer in the control box, some of the older motors have a High Temp light in the Ign Switch Plate. I would pull the Thermostat and check it for proper operation in a pot of water on the stove should open at about 143 deg, but if water comes to a boil and thermostat doesn't open, get a new one, OMC Part number 382385 or Sierra part number 18-3669. Thermostat may need to open in order for cooling water to pass thru those two passages in the exhaust housing, been a while since I last worked on one. Also check the Pressure Valve behind it as well. I would not run that motor until checking the Thermostat and Never run it without a Thermostat!!!

You have a very nice Motor and a Beautiful Glassic to go with it ;)

Oh, by the way, this motor is either a 1972 or someone put a 1972 cover on it. :p

What is the Model number on this motor? 65272S ?, 65273S ?, 65372R ?, or 65373R ?

Re: Trying to start 73 Evinrude 65hp Triumph for the first time in 8 years...

Model number is 65273S

Pulled the thermostat and it was wet on both sides. Heated it up in a pot of water and it didnt really open up all the way until about 170, then i took the water off the heat and took the thermostat out. When the water was about 160 degrees I dropped the closed thermostat in, it opened slightly ~.08 - .1", checked the water temp and was at 155. So anyway, I ordered a new thermostat. My understanding from reading around is that the two holes on the back are exhaust relief holes and water really only exits them when the thermostat is open. Does that sound right? I see some people saying, water does come out of theres pretty good and i see videos on you tube but I'm thinking if their thermostats are stuck open that could happen. So I guess I dunno whats correct operation. I was careful to align the water tube coming out of the pump and it had a plastic sleeve on it that I had retained in place on the pump with grease as I raised the LU up and watched the tube go in it.
