Ok, 1972 65hp electric shift, yea that Thermostat needs to be changed and once the motor gets up to running temp you will see water shooting out of those two holes. Did you by any chance check the Pressure Relief Valve's and if any trash or blockage behind them?

I'm assuming the pressure relief valves are the two plugs and springs under the thermostat housing. I was sure to let both springs fly across the garage, after that I pulled the plugs out. They came out easily and had a bit of gunk on them that I cleaned off but I did not blow air thru them or anything. Thanks for the info on the model number... I thought the 73 meant 1973 but I do see the engine covers are different from 72 to 73.

Yea, that is the pressure relief valves, 65273S 65= HP, 2= Last number of the year (1972).

Has this motor been in Saltwater and did you change the water pump or was it done by a mechanic???

Next time you run this motor I would check the temps on all three cylinders and the Head from Top to Bottom Side to Side with preferably a Infrared Gun Laser Thermometer, (almost all temps on the cylinders and head should be below 175 deg with the exception of the spark plugs) I also use Thermomelt sticks 125 deg and 163 deg where as the 125 should melt and not the 163. If you you are having high temp issues anywhere on that motor I would pull that head off as well and check for junk, trash, and Aluminum Oxide buildup in the head and water jacket of the cylinders.

Never been in salt water and yes I changed the pump myself... but I am quite a capable mechanic and feel confident with the impeller swap and that I got the tube installed properly. I took it out again today with my trusty infrared thermometer and checked it quite frequently. It never went over 155 at the hottest location I could find and I was still able to hold my hand on the head w/o it hurting very bad. I did notice water coming out of the relief holes once it was heated up. Im still going to install a new thermostat but it really seems like everything is fine. Thanks again for all the input and advice! I'm gonna have a great time this summer with this thing... now I just need to learn how to ski!

Rudemen has it about covered. I would add rather than rope starting the engine when the RED plug is disconnected, run a small jumper wire from the battery cable terminal of the starter solenoid to the small 3/8" nut on the solenoid that engages the starter circuit (it will still be active).

Also, sitting for that length of time, the carburetors will no doubt require reworking.

it seems to run pretty good. Gets up to 35mph which is what people said it should with this prop so I'm not feeling like it really needs anything other than the thermostat that I ordered. The lake water is still brisk so it probably helps, it would read 155 degrees right after going wot for four minutes then down to 135 degrees within probably less than a minute. Maybe when the water is ten degrees hotter this old thermostat might be more of an issue. It was good to see water coming out the relief holes today, now I know its all working.
