Re: TS Fay Idiots

I imagine there's some sort of release on that thing. You figure he'd have tried to get out of it instead of hanging on for the ride as he did...

And all this XTREME!!!!! sports stuff has just gotten silly.

Re: TS Fay Idiots

I have to chime in on this one being a kiteboarder for a few years now.

The guy made several very serious mistakes, the first was being out in those conditions. When its blowing onshore you only go out if its not gusty and you know what you are doing. After wind guysts are in the 30/35 MPH range and up its TOO dangerous. Kites are not meant for that kind of abuse. It is doable but not suggested by any of the safety organizations or any brand. Judging by the video wind must have been 35 at least with gusts into the 40s.

Second mistake is that when things go wrong you need to let go of the bar. You are still attached via waist harness to the kite but letting go depowers the kite. Depending on kite type C or Bow (read Ferrari or Ford Escort) it can be depowerable from 30-85% (as a vague rule). He is clearly holding on the entire time and keeping the kite (his sail) powered.

Third mistake was not reaching for the quick release. It is advised that kiters practice pulling it and reaching for it so that it becomes a reflex. I do it at launch, land, and as i land a jump just in case. The release is either a loop you pull at the attachment point near your harness (belly button area) or a handle you push away. BUT, under such high tension as a result of the very high wind that may not even function properly.

Fourth mistake was protection. The guy was not wearing a helmet or an impact vest. If you are kiting in onshore winds (blowing from the sea onto shore) you should wear one. I always wear one and people that think i look stupid can kiss my *****$$. If i am kiting our local sandbar that I get to by boat with nothing around for miles, I leave it off, otherwise, its on.

They guy is doing pretty bad. He is still in critical condition. And this incident has provided a HUGE amount of bad press for the sport. It is an extreme sport and dangerous, but when you follow the rules its really not that bad. I hope he gets better to kite safely another day.

I can post a link to the HUGE debate about this on the kite forum if someone wants.

I haven't heard anything other than what I saw here. Hopefully the guy makes it through. We all make mistakes, and hopefully he doesn't end paying the ultimate price for this one.

It looks like the wind was actually in the high teens so they were on larger kites. And they tried to get to shore and beat the squall as it was about to hit. The gust were to upper 40s

As you can see there is a kite with his kite low, that is what saved his life. This guy probably kept his kite at 12 (above your head).

I have not seen any updates on his condition.

Latest news is that he is recovering. Apparently some spinal fracrures, a broken rib and ankle, and brain swelling, but he doing better and is expected to recover.

The article that I read also said that he was an experienced kite boarder. A buddy said he thinks he had some sort of trouble using the emergency release on the harness.

Fatality in Neptune Beach FL...Tourists from Indiana visiting a friend went swimming in the ocean. Duh. The men barely made it out, the woman was rescued but later passed away at the hospital. It's hard to feel bad for people who put others at risk when they need to be rescued...

Natural Selection strikes again.

Unfortunately it happend so fast and this guy was in a panic and it never got that far. Your friend is a bit wrong though. The way it works is that there are 2 primary types of kites. 4 and 5 line kites.

On a 4 line kite the front two lines support your weight as you get pulled through the water, they go through a control bar and attache to a hook with a no-release pin on your waist harness. Then the bar has the 2 back lines attached to the tips. These lines are used to control the angle of attack (depower teh kite by pushing out and power up by pulling in) and the steering of the kite. There is a safety leash that attaches from your harness to a safety ring on the bar setup. On 5 line kites a center line from the front runs from the kite through the bar and has a safety ring on it rather than on one of the steering or lift lines. Either way, the point is that if you pull the release on the bar system and the kite detaches from your harness, the leash pulls on the line with the ring and flags your kite out and kills the power. At this point you are attached to a flagged out kite via leash thats attached to one line. Again, different manufacturers are different, but for my gear I like redundancy. So i also have a release on my leash or a release on my harness that will break my connection to the leash as well. And I also have an easily reachable hook knife in my harness as well to cut lines.

The guy's release did not fail, he simply didnt react fast enough to reach for it even, his hands didnt even leave the bar.

Some manufacturers have releases that have had situations where they jammed under extreme load and if/when jammed with sand. There has been a bit of a consumer revolt to standardize the release mechanism. Luckily France has instituted federal testing standards so all brands must now pass those, so its a bit of safety.

Sorry for the LONG response, this has been a HUGE reality check for me.

I agree with the last post. There is nothing funny about someone suffering severe injuries. Even though the guy was out of his limits, by his own fault for not returning to shore before the winds started picking up. But most of us here have been put in a scenario not much different from this. Some have been hurt, others luckier. But I feel sorry for any human that laughs at someone getting hurt.

I don't see anything remotely funny about watching someone get seriously hurt.

I don't, either, and it's even worse to watch someone get hurt who isn't smart enough to be outside alone! Sometimes a reality check is in order in spite of the pain involved ...

Re: TS Fay Idiots

Good info, guys.

Every fall (well, for the last 3 years) I help out with safety at a wind surfer/kite board race on lake Mille Lacs. We haven't had super high winds for any of our outings yet since we've had kite boarders, but sooner or later we will, and I hope when we do the guys racing stay safe.

After all, I don't want to haul a busted up kiteboarder to shore... I'd ding my prop, and get blood all over my nice clean boat :)

Yeah, not funny at all. I've seen some guys get their ankles jacked up just from popping over the wake on a wakeboard wrong, and I just felt sick.

This is 20 times worse. The guy is lucky to be alive. God willing, maybe one day he'll be watching the video and laughing, but that's not gonna be for a long time...

Re: TS Fay Idiots

Well just an update: The entire kiteboarding community on an international level has banded together and is against this guy. Not only did he do something super unsafe to himself, the possible rescuers, and bystanders. But now he is doing interviews on teh news and saying he will go out in the next storm again. I honestly think he is behaving a bit brain damaged but looks to me like its a pre-existing condition.:p
