Re: tuliped valve

I guess it’s at this time that we assume that jasper built you the correct spec engine to mate up with all the Volvo gear! Was it them that told you that your 5.0lt manifold, Injectors and standard ECU would all work with the increased displacement of the 5.7. I'm not saying it won't but all this talk about model numbers, manuals and sensors makes perfect sense if the original Volvo spec 5.0 was still installed and untouched, but it aint! Near as I can tell; now it’s a rebuilt 5.7 with 5.0 Volvo inlet, and throttle body assembly and it’s fitted with one ‘odd’ head.

The ECM, Injectors, sensors, etc. were the same for the 5.0L and 5.7L engines for the BY Models.

Paulie,

not understanding what you are saying/asking. Jasper said it would be fine. Are they the experts at volvo? probably not, but I believe 5.0 and 5.7 gm models that most parts are compatible. One person wants me to pull the timing chain cover to make sure that Jasper aligned the gears and chain correctly. But I really believe more of what Don is saying about the fuel pressure and sensors. I had the same problem with the second engine as the first, blown exhaust valve on the # 3 cylinder two times.
what do you think?

Re: tuliped valve

I just went back and was reading the original couple of posts. I'm beginning to wonder if you didn't kill both engines by tinkering?

I had 5.0GI volvo engine that tuliped a valve. the 5.0 had about 150 hours on it, ran great on year, the next year I took it out one time ran for about 5 hours, then tuliped the valve.

I just put the intake from the old 5.0 back on it. I will say that before it blew the second head, I dont know if it ran great, I was having problems setting the timing (from inexperience).

Do you realize that the engine has to be put into service mode before you can set the timing with a Delco EST distributor on an EFI engine. If you try to do it the old points method of point and turn, then you were so far off that you would loose an engine.
That's why even us professionals use the manuals. You just never know what has to be a little different than normal anymore.
Yea, I am a Volvo tech and do this for a living.

Don,

I wouldnt disagree with you for a minute. I am and was way over my head. I do believe there is a chance I blew the second one because I didnt time it correctly (maint. mode). So what could have caused the first one to blow and why am I now having the backfiring, low power issues with the new one. I had a tech do the timing and he did put it in maint mode to time it.

Re: tuliped valve

You need to do a lot of testing Pat, Fuel pressures, vacuum gauge readings, tracing out circuits and component tests and following the troubleshooting charts in the manual are the only inexpensive way you are going to find the problem. Guessing and throwing parts at it hoping for a cure is going to cost you both an arm and a leg and probably still won't find the problem.
It EFI, not a carbed engine with a points distributor backyard DIY engine you have there. You need the proper test equipment, know how to use them, and the proper manuals and then you may stand a chance. But will at least have the abilities to check suggestions posted here without just throwing more parts at it.

Don,

really sounds like I need to get a volvo mechanic on it. I dont think I have the test equipment to fix this. thanks much.
