a buddy of mine is planning on redoing all of his exterior woodwork with a two part varnish..claim to be much better than traditional one part products and gives better longevity and gloss retention...has anybody used such a product? if so, what were your results and how tough is this stuff to use

Re: two part varnish

glenrow, I am a bit of a masochist when it comes to finishing wood on the exterior of my boat, my wife says I have lost my mind... I have used a product by awlgrip, called "awlbrite" which when all said and done, I did not think it was worth the extra money. (about 65 bucks a quart if I remember right).. another time I tried using 3 coats of west system epoxy with sun bloc added and then an additional 7 coats of spar varnish..(the teak was beautiful) this approach seemed to do the best as the finish lasted about 5 years and was easy to touch up. but I think the real reason it worked well was because I took all the wood off and coated all the sides, sealing each piece completely.. just remember that the sun is your enemy. if you can keep the boat covered when not in use, then the finish will last much longer......
