I hate asking this question cause of the negative feed back.

Has Anyone used Pennzoil marine XLF 2 cycle oil in their outboard?

It's at a good price per gallon but it has a synthetic blend i normally use Walmart brand two stroke oil for my outboards. if i switch two a synthetic blend will it affect my motor in any way? [My Nissan 18hp, Force 9.9hp, & Yamaha 2hp]

I want to get away from the store brand oils cause of bad engine oil that destroyed my friends car.

Yes you will get negative comments. If you had done a search you would have found 1001 other threads asking the same question. There is no one best oil.

I tried the PZ based on good comments here. Bad move, poor advice, beware of internet pundits. For me it smoked too much and i disposed of it.

I personally found Evinrude XD 50 to be the best oil around. I say "best' because of smoke and running performance.

Truth be told, you could use wallycrap $0.35 / gallon and if you didn't mind the smell your motor probably wouldn't know the difference.

What Jim S said. As many opinions and differing experiences as there are posters. I, for example, used that Pennzoil semi-synthetic in my 175 Johnson and liked it. It smoked much less than pure dino oil and was less expensive than the other semi-synthetics. Having said that, I never tried a full synthetic oil, which probably would have worked even better.

Try it if you want. It won't hurt the motors.

personally, I don't mind the smell of 2 stroke motors.
the wallycrap isn't that bad for the smaller motors. and its like $12 a gallon not $0.35. i wish it was that much.

The quicksilver 2 stroke oil by mercury is terrible. smokes all the time and kept fouling my plugs.

I'll try that evinrude XD 50 down the road once i burn off the current tank. 3 gallons left.

I have used both the XLF and Wallyworld TCW-III in my boats. There is no noticeable difference in smoke or performance.

For some reason, Starbrite semi-synthetic seems to smoke less. Not sure why.

Re: Two Stroke Oil question

WOW another what 2-cycle oil is best thread. I look at it this way, if the oil states that it meets or exceeds manufacture's specification, what is the difference? And for the record, I like the smell of 2-cycle oil in the early morning... So most any 2-cycle oil that makes specs and is easy on the wallet would work for me. I don't need to spend huge dollars for something that in the long run will not make any difference anyway. Every oil manufacturer changes their recipe all the time anyway, so who really knows from one purchase to the next what they really are buying. Color is added per manufacture request and not my deciding factor.

I've used the Wallyworld TCW-III and recently switched to Pennsoil XLF and have noticed a smaller spot of unburnt oil on the cement drive where the lower unit drains when parked. The motor is a 1957 35hp RDE Johnson. I found it quite interesting. I can't say I notice any difference in how it runs or smoke level when running but it sure looks like more of it is getting burnt.

I have used a variety of oils: Pennzoil (AKA Yellow death) Quaker State, Super Tech (AKA Wallyworld), Quicksilver, etc. I use whatever is cheapest or available at the time. The fact is that as long as you use a TWC-3 rated oil at the correct ratio, you simply will not destroy your engine. Buy and run whatever you want.
