I'm new to stern drives so some of my questions might seem stupid. Since alot has changed since 1974, can I use synthetic oil and what viscosity? Does the engine and outdrive use the same oil? Setup is Volvo AQ190A/270. Thanks all.

You will find different opinions here about dino V syn, my own personal preference is to not use syn in 30 year old V8's. In fact, depending on the condition of the motor, i would tend to go with something a bit heavier than normal.

Volvo specs in 1977 called for 10w30, 10w40 or 20w40. Same for outdrive.

Agree, save the money and use dino oil, but don't skimp on the filter.

We have always used straight SAE 30 in our 76 Merc, but volvo may be different. Over 500hrs with nary a problem. I use Wix filters on it though, so nothing too cheap. If we rebuilt it with new seals/rings I would probably use Mobile 1 or other synthetic.
