I'm trying to replace the U-joints on my Alpha 1 gen 2 drive. The serial number is OM464998. I believe I need part number 865496A02. These things are $130 a piece, for a non-zerk fitting simple U-joint for pete's sake. Can anyone confirm that this is the right part number? Does anyone have a cross reference to a truck or car part that will work? I can't imagine Merc would special make this and not take a known truck u-joint design.

The 2 hour round trip I took to the marina that supposedly had them in stock gave me the ones that had the clips on the inside that go on the bearing cups, but mine have the clips that go on the outside into a groove in the yoke / shaft. He said they would fit. Well, the OD of the cup is right, but the cross is too long and won't go into the yoke (yes, I removed the cups / caps before trying). So that's another 2 hours of driving for nothing.

Finally, what adhesive do you use to hold the o-ring and gasket to the gimbal housing when remounting the outdrive?

Thanks in advance.

Re: U-joint for a Alpha 1 Gen 2

Years ago I had an Alpha 1 and the u-joints were the same as my '82 Dodge W350. Hmmmm...... Replaced the Alpha joints with six and a half buck replacement truck joints from parts house (with zerk fittings) and 4 years later, were in perfect shape when boat was sold.

Yours may be different, but search the web a little for joints (maybe Moog) spec sheets and try to match up yours with the spec sheets. A U-joint is a U-joint. I am sure Merc doesn't make them from Stainless Steels or some other exotic material. Probably OEM them from same plant that makes a zillion other OEM brands.

On the adhesive, I used to just use a little Permatex Form a Gasket sealer. Holds everything in place, seals well when under pressure and comes off nice and easy when you want it to. On the Bravo I have now, just a little grease, cause there are no gaskets, just o-rings

Ayuh,... I believe there's a cross reference for 'em up in the Adults Only section, at the top of this forum...

Bond-o,
I have those printed out and from what I can tell they all have the clips on the inside and not the outside. I will go to Napa though and have a look. From what I can tell, GEN II at some point switches from one style to my expensive style in the 2000. I belive in the serial numbers above OL something and I'm a OM serial.

Here is from a Volvo thread, but are the same ujoints with the outside keepers as you have. Maybe it will help you.
Sierra also carries them, pn 18-6406, but still over 100 bucks.

Don: I have researched this for about 6 hours over the course of a couple days.

Here is what I have which should work, I do not have access to them but would like to order one just to match up. The precision 344 can be had for $20 and is available online in the US......... If you order one let me know results

Neapco 1-005 NOTE: This ujoint may have grease zirks in caps. DO NOT use if they do.

Don, you sir are the man. I already had the 100+ ones ordered and on next day air for tomorrow delivery, but if I have to do it again I will let you and the gang know if these fit. Had plans for the boat this holiday weekend and just broken down after 2 hours at Napa measuring U-joint they had in stock and none fitting. Mad props to those guys for going the extra mile with me to help, and to you gents for the assistance.
