I was gonna practice basketball with my daughter a little today. Shes 8 and has been driving a go cart for several years so I figure why not let her back the van and car out of the drive. She was very reluctant but finally did it. What can I say man, just like a chip off the ol block, did it like a pro. Man was I proud! We played for a little while and decided to stop. I asked if she wanted to pull it back, and she agreed. She was doing great, then I said stop. Foot comes off the brake and on to the gas wide open. The whole thing reminds me of that country song- Hello Walls. What can I say, just like a chip off of the ol block. The wall she ran into used to be a garage, its enclose and is now a game room. She made it about a foot shorter than it was. I was gonna file it on insurance but figure either way its gonna cost me, deductible is about as high as it would be to fix it myself. I haven't removed the paneling yet but I pulled the siding away and it looks like two studs, a little bit of insulation, a piece of paneling, and one piece of glass about 12X32.

You of all people should know better than to let her drive onto the street. What if that would have happened when she was in the road, and hit someone? Oh yeah, just flash the badge.

Oh, I'm sure you were "watching real close".
This sort of thing really ticks me off.

Re: UH OH- What not to let the kids do-True story

Good evening Roscoe, is it P Coltrane of the dukes of hazzard?

Just fussing at ya, just like you did me. Your right, I shouldn't have let her do it.

1: No, I wasn't exactly watching real close, I was sitting about an inch away from her, so I guess thats even closer than real close.
2: Thats why we live in the COUNTRY, no other cars, nobody walking, no interfernece, no nosey neighbors, just US.
3: If by some unfathomable chance somebody was in MY DRIVEWAY then I reckon my CAR INSURANCE or my HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE would have covered it. If not, then thats why we have courts, so they can get what they have coming legally , which would be NOTHING because once again, its MY DRIVEWAY, not a public roadway.
4: I have never used my position in the manner you describe. To make a statement such as yours is totally disrespectful to me and my profession. I am sure there are dirty cops out, I'm not one of them.

This post was meant to help me laugh about a problem. Its that or cry, and my dad didn't raise a titty baby. If it bothers you that much, just keep ticking.

ATTN MODS: If anything in the posts that I have written is out of line I will be happy to edit. I believe that I followed the rules of the board, please allow me to correct instead of killing my "humor instead of depression" post.

Kids---aint they the greatest. Go ahead and laugh at this as thats about all you can do. Reminds me of me :D When I was about 9 yrs old I went with my father to friends and he let me drive this humungous tractor while he feed the cattle off of the trailer behind. All went well until I hit a bump wrong and he fell off the trailer. By the time he got up I was 100 yards from him and it was all I could do to steer my legs were to short to brake. I made a great big circle and he jumped back up on the trailer and finished feeding the cattle. Course what he never told my dad the was that I had run through two barb wire fences and had just barely missed going over an embankment down into the creek. HA HAH was fun growing up. Went back the next week and drove the smaller yard tractor. Fit me just fine.

KB, sorry to hear of the accident to the casa. Perhaps she figured she needed to apply the same amount of pressure to the gas pedal as she did with the go-cart. I hope she is OK, must have scared her. I to like you, when living in the country, had the kids driving at 7 and 8 years old around the house.
As a man of the badge that you are sir, wondering if you had ever heard of these stupid excesses from people who had just had an accident?

Coming home, I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I didn't have.
The other car collided with mine without giving warning of its intention.
I thought my window was down, but I found it was up when I put my head through it.
I collided with a stationery truck coming the other way.
A truck backed through my windshield into my wife's face.
A pedestrian hit me and went under my car.
The guy was all over the road, I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him.
I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law and headed over the embankment
In an attempt to kill a fly, I drove into a telephone pole.
I had been shopping for plants all day and was on my way home. As I reached an intersection, a hedge sprang up, obscuring my vision and I did not see the other car.
I had been driving for 40 years when I fell asleep at the wheel and had an accident.
I was on my way to the doctor with rear end trouble when my universal joint gave way, causing me to have an accident.
As I approached the intersection, a sign suddenly appeared in a place where no stop sign had ever appeared before. I was unable to stop in time to avoid the accident.
To avoid hitting the bumper of the car in front, I struck the pedestrian.
My car was legally parked as it backed into the other vehicle.
An invisible car came out of nowhere, struck my car and vanished.
I told the police I was not injured, but on removing my hat, I found I had a fractured skull
I was sure the old fellow would never make it to the other side of the road when I struck him.
I saw a slow-moving, sad faced old gentleman as he bounced off the roof of my car
The indirect cause of the accident was a little guy in a small car with a big mouth.
I was thrown from my car as it left the road. I was later found in a ditch by some cows.

Re: UH OH- What not to let the kids do-True story

Thanks guys, I'm glad I don't have to laugh at myself all by myself. I just pulled the paneling off the wall. It looks great. One stud under the window broke, the other two just knocked loose from the bottom plate. Shore up the top and slip them back in place with some new screws (since I can't nail to save my life) and it'll be almost as good as new.

88spl- I actually have. The guy was all over the road, I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him. That statement was given by a 16 year old girl that had gotten her licsence 2 days before. Good part about that story is it was true, the other car was driven by an extremely drunk old man. Luckily neither was hurt.

Kenneth don't sweat the small stuff. Enjoy that little child like there ain't no tomorrow. ;)

BTW I think that remark from member 17069 was way out of line. All that carry badges aren't crooks. :(

Re: UH OH- What not to let the kids do-True story

Bring it on, I can take it. ;)
I'm used to it. I speak my mind.

Pardon me, but you said "out of the drive".
My mistake.

Local HS Teachers providing beer to minors.
Local HS principle driving drunk.
State AG driving drunk.
Local cop confiscates several cases of beer from an underage party. Beer is found in his basement a few days later.
Local Detective's kid let go after breaking into residents garage and car. Really hit the fan when the surveilance video popped up on tv.
Local undercover drug agent, supplied alcohol to HS students, to get "inside". He sells real estate now.
Local Police Chief fired after "inappropriate use of Dept property." (sexual liasons)
Deputy's daughter (my co-worker), underage drunk driving into ditch, I witnessed it, not charged, but went to counseling.
State trooper got owi after xmas party.

These incidents all happened in my area, within approx the last 3 years, except for one which happened about 10 years ago.

And I could list a dozen more from the times I lived in the city. Like a drunk cop being given a ride home from a serious accident in Milw, (they all got caught, seems private ambulance had video).

I find it no wonder at all that the respect our law enforcement deserves, is dwindling.

THIS is what ticks me off.

These guys are supposed to be setting the good example and be looked up to.
Yet they are all to often trying to get away with something.

Sorry for any mention or suggestion of personal impropriety or misconduct on your part. I was wrong there.

P.S. Where can I get an insurance policy that would cover an accident like this? :)

Kenneth Brown, I would like to tell you you'r an idiot, especially being a policeman, but I won't, as I too did something too stupid to believe with a 10 yr old many years back. It too seemed fun till it all went pear shaped.
When I read/see TV of tragedies, I think "there but for the grace of God go I".
Thanks for your post tho, and having the nerve to put it up. I don't mean it to sound as harsh as it reads.
It brings reality back to our lives, and better than arguing the toss over other topics that appear!!!
Cheers
Phillip

KB,

You are a cop and you don't know how to handle this? Come on. You must have asked her for licence and proof of insurance. Not having either that has to be a couple hundred bucks in fines. Was she wearing a seat belt? Another 50-100 there.

By leving these fines you should be able to cover your losses. :p :p

Hope your daughter is ok, thats the main thing. As far as you being a cop, its refreshing to know that you don't bring it home with you

Re: UH OH- What not to let the kids do-True story

Sorry Roscoe, I guess I should clarify a little bit. Where we park the cars is concrete, its about 25'X 20'. Behind that is gravel, thats where the cars were moved to. It would be way too much money to concrete/blacktop/any other type of hard surface all of it. I understand your concern after posting all that you did about the LEO's in your area, I would be concerned too. Most insurances would cover it, they would probably raise the rates considerably or drop you afterwards, but they would cover it. Lastly- Thanks for the apology, it means alot to me. I post under my real name here as I have nothing to hide. My opinions are mine and I stand behind them 100%. I am glad that you will speak out on topics that you can bring knowledge and information into. The people on this board as a whole think alike, I wish that we as a group could speak out since we tend to be the quiet majority.

Kiwi Phil- I am an idiot. There, now you didn't have to do it. The first step towards recovery is admitting that you have a problem ;)

Pointer- I asked her whether she wanted to sell the go cart or her new horse to cover the repairs. She didn't really know what to say, just kinda looked at me.

Tylerin- Shes fine. We hit the wall about 3 mph. I would have never thought that slow could do that much. The van is fine, no scratches even.

Through it all everything is gonna be fine. Nobody got hurt, just a little bit more remodeling to continue where I just stopped about 2 weeks ago. I told my duaghter that she was not at fault, I was. All I expected from her was a hug. As I said before, I could laugh or I could cry, and no tears are gonna run from my eyes over bs like this.

Re: UH OH- What not to let the kids do-True story

Actually Pat its quite a long story. Lets start from the beginning.
8 Am: Me and my Dad head out to the lake for fishing, first time of the year. I catch five bass to his one. It is never this way, he always out fishes me.
12Am: Me and him go to the gun show. I find the one I want. Mini 14 ranch model in stainless. The price is even right, but the guy doesn't want to take a check. The man in the booth next to him is a local and has an instant check machine and agrees to cash it for him.
4Pm: See first post
6Pm: Figure whats done is done so off to feed the horses and shoot the new gun. Man was that fun.

It still wasn't a bad day.

I do teach firearm safety to my daughter. She has a "buck" bb gun and I made her read the manual and take a test before she touched it. She has total respect for all firearms. I keep the gun and she doesn't see it if I am not with her. I got my first gun at 5. It was a 410 pump. My dad did the same with me, except that I couldn't read so that part was out. The very first thing I shot was a watermelon. He then told me imagine that was a persons head. It was pretty harsh but very effective.

Na, I ain't dissapointed, a little upset, but just another day.

Kenneth,
Been on the road for the past 7 hrs delivery my product, but thinking of my reply too you.
Come to the conclusion that after the stunts I've pulled in life, I have no right to be righteous and call anybody an idiot.
I don't even have the nuts to mention some of my acts of stupidity - I just cringe inside.
I admire you for using your name; it is like talking to a real person. I only use half of mine.
Cheers
Phillip

KB,

Hope you did not get upset with your daughter. I'm sure ya'll are laughing about it now. If she remembers her daddy keeping his cool in that situation she may be more willing to confide in you later when she really needs you.

Maybe you could go to a little trophy shop and see if they have a small "Cup" type award to give to those that have done boo-boos.

She might get a kick out of that.
Nothing mean, just humorous.

Sounds like some good father daughter bonding to me.The saftey police are alive and well. I congradulate you for letting you kid grow, learn, and have fun. I have similiar stories about my kids, only with a tractor, snowmobile and guns. As parents we should limit risks not try to eliminate them. Well, on second thought let mothers try to eliminate risks us fathers need to let them take risks. That usually strikes a balance that turns out mature well rounded kids, another good reason to keep the traditional family intact. CARRY ON.
