so what is the difference between a gps and a chart plotter? Seems to me like they do the exact same thing, even take the same maps.

On the same note, is it better to get a handheld unit so that I can use it in the car too?

1. All chart plotters are GPS, not all GPS are chartplotters. Go to a dealer and look ...

2. Don't know, sounds like a personal decision to me. I never had use for one in a car, so I'd say "no" ...

A chart plotter shows a map on the screen or plots a map.

A plain GPS will only show your numbers, like your current postion and a bearing to your next waypoint. NO MAP.

They both do the same thing but the plotter plots your position on a MAP.

A handheld unit is easy to move to the car and some do a fine job in the car but some unit better for Marine use and some better for auto use. Some handheld have better marine maps and some have better land and road maps.

Example the marine unit will say arriving at way point and then switch to your next waypoint and give your the bearing and distance to next waypoing.

The Land or street unit may say turn right on marine way in 100 feet.

There are a few unit that you can switch from marine to street.

Re: ultimate newbie gps question

I used two (maybe three) handheld units in both my boat and vehicle.

The GPS38 (Garmin) was not a chartplotter, the GPSMAP12 (handheld) and GPSMAP 162 (not handheld)were chartplotters. None of them had special software for vehicle use, but were useful in the vehicle anyway.

My current GPS, a 276C has both marine and vehicle navigation maps and software and I use it both places. It is also portable for "handheld" use. Quickly switches from marine to auto programming.

Most GPS units, handheld or powered, can be powered for use in a vehicle with optional mounts and power cords.

JB not to steal Bandit post but how is the viewablity of the Garmin GPSMAP 276C in the car in both dim light and bright sun? I have the Garmin GPSMAP 76 and love the unit except so hard to see in the car in either dim or bright sun light.
