Understanding resistance for coil

I am installing an electronic ignition and have received advice on the 3.0 ohms to the coil. I still do not understand how to test for this. Do you test the wire leading to the coil? What should it read? This is a petronic system and I have been advised to just install it and it will work but I want to understand the issue of 3.0 ohms. Any explaination would be appreciated and a procedure for testing.

IF coil resistance is too low, it will draw excess current and burn out the trigger in the distributor.
To test your coil hook up to a 12 volt battery with an ammeter in series and measure the current. Use Ohms law to find R.
Hint: 3 ohm coil should draw about 4 A.

[colour=blue]OR use an OHM meter.

Disconnect all wires from the coil. Set your MM to 0 - 2M OHM scale for primary resistance test and 2M - 20M scale for secondary test.

Connect one test lead to the small neg terminal and the other test lead to the pos terminal - the reading you get is the primary resistance, you need 3ohm (or there abouts).

Connect one test lead to either small terminal and the other test lead to the tower terminal, this is the secondary resistance test.[/colour ]
