Ok - so I was thinking of going for a nice Friday evening cruise, anchoring and smoking a cigar. Well this morning I get an e-mail that sons baseball coach wants to have practice on Friday night? Do you guys with kids find this extremely frustrating. The league deal was one practice per week and games on Saturday. I mean the kids only 9. Am I being selfish for not taking him, I mean I work all week and the boating season is coming to an end.

Just say no. I don't see how a decline is in any way selfish.

Sounds like its a casual team if your only practicing once a week and only playing on Saturday the coach needs to make a practice schedule and not be so wishy washy and have practices when ever the mood strikes

As a parent myself I need to know way ahead when practices are,my kids do baseball, soccer, cheerleading, boyscouts, girlscouts, softball, basketball, wrestling, crosscountry, footaball well you get the idea its a pain to schedule everything with multiple active kids.

Ive been coaching 9-12 y/o kids going on 4 years now.I always have my seasons practice schedules made on the first night at the parent meeting. We usally have practices scheduled 5-6 days a week.We schedule lots of practices due to the season only goes from Middle of March to the middle of June ,lots of the practices get rained out(thats one of the hazards of living in Pacific N.W). All scheduled practices are mandatory(if a player cant make a practice for whatever reason I prefer them to tell me and not the parents), but if I spring a last minute practice they are always optional.

Just remember when I have to decide who plays and who has to sit on the bench I tend put in the player that shows up to practices.I dont think its fair to make Player A who hasnt missed a practice to sit out innings so player B who doesnt show up to practice can play too.(in our league every player has to play a min of 2 innings and have 1 at bat).Nothing is more frustrating as a coach to have a player not show up to practice or inform me they wont be able to attend a practice.

Now I dont know how serious your baseball is in your area, but here we take it fairly serious but we like to use Baseball to teach our kids real life skills. We like to teach kids about commitment, responsibility to team and to yourselves, how hard work brings improvement and sucess, and how life isnt always fair (yes sometimes the umpires do make bad calls).Playing on any sport teaches most of the life skills people need to learn to suceed in life not just sports.

Now after that rant it probally wasnt a big deal to miss a practice and I just hope you just didnt leave the coach hanging and not tell him/her your child wont be going.

Just remember if your kid messes up an easy play.........makes you wonder if they went over that on the practice they missed.

Its a casual fall league. We signed him up with expectation of one practice per week and game on Saturday. With my older one in the same league I'm now on 4 days a week which doesnt bother to much becasue its the fall. I just dont like the last minute practice.
