89 johnson J70TLCEM how do you unhook shift rod coupler so you can drop lower unit,does not look like bolt that you see on older johnson,please help this novice boater,thrank you very much. illustrations would be a plus..rbass

You can look at shop2.evinrude.com to find a parts diagram for your engine, that might help.

Shift rod disconnect is below the bottom carburetor. Study it and you will see how it works.

Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up your motor. Go to cyl and crankcase. Look for pin #87 330941. Pull that pin and push the linkage to the port side. This will disconnect the upper shift linkage.
