I was reading through the latest issue of Trailer Boating magazine last night, when I happened upon the editors lil' blurb. He was discussing that the uniqueness of boats is gone. The main article is on a new 28' (?) Everglades center console that had some pretty neat features. He mentioned that the editors of the magazine have trouble coming up with items that stand out on today's boats. There is a lot of monkey-see-monkey-do going on. His argument was that this was hurting the boating industry. I have to agree.

The new Everglades boat they were doing a review on had a feature I thought was cool - Jeep-style doors that can attach to the center console protecting the people in the vessel during inclement weather.

He also spoke of the FourWinns 180 Horizon from 2 years ago where they came out with an integrated bow-swim ladder. Now everyone has it. While the copying of ideas is causing all the boats to have the 'good features,' it's also causing the creativity to dissapear from the design of new boats.

What do you guys think? Is the industry turning into one, standard-looking runabout?

Sean

Re: Uniqueness

I won't buy a boat that won't float. Call me old fashioned, I guess.

Re: Uniqueness

There are new innovations all the time. They copy, but keep changing too. I guess because a lot of the boats I see are from smaller custom builders it seems less likely that they will stagnate. Like tommays has shown, a classic looking boat (beautiful by the way) is just that, classic looking because designs have changed. Take a Bayliner "Classic", they look dated now . . .

Check out this Cobalt (not a custom builder obviously, but they try weird stuff):
24sx

Re: Uniqueness

Uniqueness in a boat should be in the quality of build, design of the hull and elegance of the fittings, not in gingerbread bling-bling or rocket ship styling.

That is what makes Boston Whalers, Grady Whites, Edgewaters, Parkers and a few others unique in their class.

When a 40 year old boat is worth more than it sold for NEW, you have a unique boat.

Try to find a 1966 Boston Whaler Sakonnet in good repair for what it sold for new. . .$3200? That's what I paid for mine. I sold it in 1983 for $6500 and it is probably worth about that much today.
