I tried to search this, but got nothing.(maybe wrong terminology). Anyway, just purchased a '93 merc 115 and in going over it to clean it up a little, I found a piece of aluminum attached to the bottom surface of the transom mounting bracket. Have had a few older mercs, but none had this piece. It's about 2" wide, 1/2" thk. and is as long as the bracket is wide and attached by a small bolt on each end. I'm guessing from the looks of it that it might be some sort of anode plate. Anyone know what this is?

If you are running in fresh water you can take it off. If not, put another bolt in it.

Leave it on if you moor your boat in a Marina.

A zinc anode in freshwater does zilch even in a Marina. If its zinc, take it off in freshwater or replace it with aluminum or or even a magnesium one if you can find one.
