It happened about 12 years ago. I had to drive a C-60 chevy to Chicago to sell some automotive parts. I got to the shop at about 3am(temp was 10 f.) About 30 seconds after I got into the truck a squad car pulls up near the truck and just decides to stay there to do some paper work or something. My windows were all fogged up, and I figure I'll just wait him out. After about 10 minutes, I'm getting a little cold. I get out of the truck and aproach his car. He handles it the right way, after I told him my story. Runs my drivers licience(clean) and lets me start the truck up and be on my way. He did get a chuckle after I surprised him by getting out of the truck. Anyone got any other good tails about the long arm of the law? PDS

Re: Unusal confrontation with a police officer.

Last year my dad and I where heading home on a two land road that go's threw town. It was about 11 at night and there where no other cars on the road. There is a hill the you have to go up and over and cops sit at the bottom of the hill and pull over people who speed (unfair IMO) the posted speed limit is 35, my dad and I come up and over the hill the a cop puts the blues on us.

My dad pulls over and the cop runs the plate or whatever he does in the car before getting out.

He gets out of his car and walks up the the drives window with a big grin on his face and says "Hey Brian, what the (edit) are you doing!!!" and then he burst out into laufter.

Him and my dad had been talking that afternoon about how they where putting cops at the bottom of the hill and getting speeders, we where the 3ed person he got. We where doing 51 in a 35.

BTW,
No ticket ;)

Re: Unusal confrontation with a police officer.

Years ago, I was driving on a major arterial street here in Chicago, and suddenly I was 'lit up' with flashing lights,a bright spot light, and the sounding of the siren, the all too familiar traffic stop. Well, I stopped and got out and went back to have a chat with the officer.

When I got up close to the drivers window, there, lo and behold was my father in law, (on the force for 25 years). He just grined and steps outta' the squad, biting his lip with pride like he just apprehended some big criminal.

I looked at him as we stood there in the middle of the street with the cars whizzing by, trying to figure a way to turn the tables on him....

I reached into my back pocket, pulled my wallet, took out all of my cash and flashed it saying " How much did I owe you for buying the beer last weekend??? HA!! He freaked out to say the least.

He never pulled me over again, even for a joke. I guess I became one of the famous Untouchables

Talked my way out of a ticket doing 85 in a 35 (my younger days on the feeder road).

Talked my way out of a ticket for the expired tags on the boat trailer (expired 4 years (was out of the country)).

Other experiences where I was a bad boy, the cop was cool cause I was cool and didnt act like an idiot. We ended up tossing around a few jokes while waiting for the "paperwork".

Other cop slapped cuffs on me cause I did a starsky and hutch u-turn in front of his off duty buddy (it was in the middle of nowhere). The cuffs were way uncalled for, but I kept my cool, ended up only getting a speeding ticket (dropped reckless driving).

Ken

Well let's see.
Being I have never been in trouble with the law per say, I did have a close call many a year ago.

I was driving a fuel tanker and had a truck stop I always delivered to on Saturday night.
Reason being, they would want a full load of diesel fuel.
Well could not run it during the week cause the good ol "chicken coops" were open then and closed on the weekends.

So this Saturday had my full load of 9500 gallon which is about a tad over 70,000lbs. plus the weight of my truck and I was pushing right at 100,000lbs on a 80,000lb. road.
I was cruising along the interstate about 2 mile from the scales and met another truck coming the other way and he hollered, "Hey west bound, the coops are open"

So I hit the shoulder real quick, jumped out and put my reflective triangles out, wrote a note and put it on the windshield that I had broke down and had went for help. ;)

I then climbed in the sleeper and figured I would just take a nap and wait them out to close.
About 10 minutes and I get a knock on the door.
I peek out and look in the mirror and sure enough, DOT man.
I just layed back down for a minute and then peeked out again and seen the note was gone and so was he.

So I kept watch and ever 15 minutes or so he would drive by.
Well to make a long story short, they stayed open till 3 in the morning  and I had got me a good nap by the time they closed the scales and I went on.
Needless to say, I did that no more. :)

Re: Unusal confrontation with a police officer.

Here's one:

This summer me and my buddy where dirtbikeing. We where about 6miles from my house bikeing in a large strech of woods that is behind a trucking company.

My buddy was having prolbems with his cluch and him and I where at the back of the parking lot behind a bunch of trailers looking at it. Some big billy bad a$$ guy who working for the trucking place some running out yelling "stop police", my first instince was to get in the bike and run,.Then I saw the guy who was not a cop and as far as I knew I we where not breaking any laws. I started to walk torward him my buddy and I met him halfway acorss the parking lot.

He is huffing and puffing from all the running he's done and now he's accuseing us to steeling parts off trucks. After telling him over and over that we didn't take anying and offering to turn my pocketts inside out I told him to screw and went to leave. Then he tells me I'm under arrest and I better not move  I turned around and told him to show me his badge he produces some kind of a company card that just says he works there. I told him to take his card and stuff it, we go to leave and a real cop comes down the street. He's responding to a call that this guy made before he came out.

The cop told me and my buddy to stay there and he talked to the guy who had the beef with us. Then he pulled me aside and I told him my side of the story, and he pulled my buddy aside and got his verison. Turns out that my story and my firends story where the same, the other guy made up a bunch of BS about how we threated him and saw us looking at his trucks and all this stuff. The cop let us go and told us he thinks the man was looking for someone to blame for a number of parts that had been stolen off his trucks in the past few weeks.

Re: Unusal confrontation with a police officer.

Back in '74 when I was discharged from the Army. I tied my old laundry sack filled with a few spare parts and menial possesions to the sissybar of a Triumph650 and played "The Came Bronson" and traveled around the country.
Many times rumbling through a small town I'd get pulled over, usually for nothing but noise. Since I still had a military cut and a my military ID, I never got a ticket. Even on the cold lonely night being pulled over for 90+, the officer would look my custom bike over and chat about it instead of a ticket.
I met a girl while at Lake Tahoe, she's still my bride of 29 years. She was born and raised there and my trip stopped at Tahoe.

One morning on my way to work I ran out of gas on the Nevada side of the lake and I was within walking distance to Sand Harbor state park.
I figured they'd have a little gas. It was very early morning as I walked into the deserted park I heard some voices and headed that way. As I came into view I saw two Nevada hyway patrol cars with two troopers and two state park rangers standing around in a circle BSing, telling stories and laughing loudly. As I walked closer they seemed startled and surprised and they all quickly shook hands and the troopers split and left right as I came up to the state park rangers. As I explained my situation to the ranger and asked for some fuel, something was a little strange. We walked to a small maintenence shed, as we walked in I was shocked to see at least a dozen gas cans of all shapes and sizes everywhere! As I looked over at him for guidance, He gave a small grunt and asked me.....What we come in here for???
That simple question and the look in his eye, and the strange feeling I had before.......and that faint smell of burning leaves....and the laughing under the cloud of smoke that was over the circle of friends in that deserted parking lot.
And the out of gas fool that broke up that mornings festivities.

Re: Unusal confrontation with a police officer.

When I was in the Army, stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco, I owned a 68 Corvette Big Block! (Thats what I invested my money in while I was in Korea) from 1968-1970! Only thing I had to my name! I lived in Roseburg Oregon which was 500 miles away, and went home every chance I got! I left one Sunday night Late, had to be at revelry at 0600 Monday morning! Had taken some speed Just before the 505 cut off from I 5 cutting over to the Golden Gate bridge! I must have been trippin right along because just before I got to 101 I happened to see the flashing lights in my mirror! (This was about 3 AM! I pulled over and waited and a young HP officer came up and ask the usual questions! Then ask me "Do you have any Idea how long I have been following you"? I said, "No" Well he said " Ive been on your butt with the lights flashing just after you turned on to 505"! (Its probably close to 50 miles through there)! He then said, "Do you have any Idea how fast you were driving"? I said, "No"! Well he said, "Anywhere from 90-100MPH"! He had just got out of the army and had just became a Highway Patrol officer and we got to talking and He said, "Well, just take it easy on into town, Oh, by the way, NICE CAR, and handed my licence and military ID back to me and left!

Oh dont I wish I still had that car!!!

Re: Unusal confrontation with a police officer.

When I was 25yrs young we had three 4x4's all full of a hunting party heading for the Motu to shoot deer. We were just starting down this dirt road past a few houses and around a corner there's this big bloke punching on his lady real bad. I figure she's already in a bad way and when I rolled the window down she calls our for help!
Out of the truck (I was the lead vehicle) and starting to approach real carefully and this babboon pulls a knife and says he's going to kill me.
I reckon it took him about a full ten seconds to count all the bolts that clicked shut in that moment and he just froze. There must have been a dozen .303 to .308 pointing at him!
At this exact moment along comes the Law in a patrol car, miles from nowhere so he took over. His last comment to us was that he was happy to have all the backup but he wouldn't include it in his report or we'd need to come out to town.
Nice bloke that, never got to buy him a beer though.
Ross

Re: Unusal confrontation with a police officer.

About the same story LubeDude. With a another twist. Shipped my 1967 911 early from Germany in 1977 so it would be here when we got back. Wife and kids were down in Oregon visiting with family and I checked into Ft Lewis WA (was still on leave) to meet people in the receiving unit. Then headed towards Portland. About 30-40 minutes later saw the lights and pulled over. Had all the paper work out by the time he got to the window. While he was looking at it I asked him what I had done wrong? He just started chuckling and said I see you just picked this up yesterday, when did you get back? I said day before yesterday. He says well Sargent 5 miles back you were clocked at 125MPH and when I turned the lights on you were doing 120MPH.

Why did he chuckle
Two years earlier in 1975 as a MP coming back from Germany to Ft Lewis he had done the same thing. Same car. Got pulled over in about the same place going Portland also. The SP that pulled him over was a vet (MP) who had ETS in 1973 After a tour in Germany. Instead of giving him a ticket he said if he didn't mind leaving Portland That WA SP could use some help so thats how he got the job. Needless to say I didn't get a ticket that day either :)

Hey Link,
It looks like you were in Germany about the same time I was (76-79). Where were you stationed? I was in the Rhineland area West of Frankfurt near the Belgian/French border. I was in a little post just outside of Haun Air Base. Also spent time in Baumholder.

Hehe.....

I'm the one usually turning on the blue lights....

Cop for 25+ years now.... currently a detective awaiting retirement.......in 13 years.

I work the road rarely now, usually for overtime or shift coverage as needed. Being cool with a cop and "yes sir", "no sir" goes a long way when dealing with a officer. Some are A-holes and will give a citation to their mothers but most look at it as a job and dont have anything to "prove". :D

Re: Unusal confrontation with a police officer.

Just this past New Years Day, herself and I went back to the area in which my truck got hit with a deer. We wanted to see if the critter was still around (dead) and get a picture.

We went north on the highway and turned around at a overpass and started south. A Ohio State Trooper was setting along the road. Speed limit on the highway is 55.

Not remembering just where the deer strike occured, I was doing say 35 to 40, very light traffic. Passed the trooper.

Next thing I know, I see the lights in the mirror. Of course he ask for license and registration first which I gave him. He looked at it for a minute and as "Do you own a boat?" I said yes. Then he said "Well....your tailer license is in order, can I see the tow vehicles registration too?" I was kinda embarrassed and he had a big grin on his face.

He was just wondering why I was going so slow on a highway on New Years Day. I explained what happened and we parted company. The Trooper was a real gentleman.

Re: Unusal confrontation with a police officer.

In my younger day I had many a contact for traffic violation of one sort or the other. Some good some not so good all deserved but the one that sticks out is this:

New years eve downtown San Antonio with my bride to be. We had knowan each other quite some time but had just recently hooked up. We decided to celebrate on the river walk four hours away so we grabbed a case of beer and headed out about 8pm. The river walk was going to be a tight fit timewise and the beer was going down good. About four miles from downtown and at 90mph at 11;30 a cop pulls me over. After the usual questions he asks me "have you been drinking". Knowing there is no pulling off a lie I state. "It's New Years eve isn't it" with my best smile. He determines where I'm headed and says if I promise not to leave the riverwalk that night he will allow me to park the truck and gives us a ride the last four miles.

Should have been a DWI that night but his acceptance of my truthfulness lead to the last time I drove and drank!!

Re: Unusal confrontation with a police officer.

Was dating my wife at the time. Decided to take a ride up into the mountains to take a few pictures. Cruising down the highway at 75 in a 55 and on come the blue lights. She was driving her car with her vanity plates (KLS), her initials. This big, man mountain of a trooper comes up to her window, and in a very deep voice says "You are the reason I can't have my initials on my liscence plates". She tells the officer that we are engaged, so her initials are gonna be changing so he will be able to have his initials on his plates. She got off with a verbal warning.
