Re: Unusal confrontation with a police officer.

Just after I got married I was in Baton Rouge LA helping my father in law move my sister in law. he rents a u-haul and tells me to drive his car. This would be a new cherry red, convertible Porsche Boxster. So there we are driving down I-10 doing 55mph(U-haul governed) my father in law the 50+ yr old Dr. driving a u-haul and me the 26 yr old driving the Boxster. Two La HP pull up behind us trailing for about 5 miles. I am thinking here we go I am gonna get pulled for screwing around in a car way out of my price range. New father in law will be pissed at me for getting a ticket in his car. The HP proceed to box in my father in law and pull him over. I pull to the front of the lead HP and get out to find out why the hell they would pull over him instead of me. They tell me I looked like I was a cop or in the military(which I am) and that there have been alot of thiefs of u-hauls lately. Now I ask you which looks more out of place, well dress older guy in a u-haul or a 26 yr old kid in a 50K dollar car? never did figure that one out.

Howdy Popup, you asked so I'll tell you. Pulling over a young guy just because he is driving a 50K car would be a classic example of Profiling.

Now pulling over a Well Dressed older Man driving a U-haul, at a time when U-Hauls were being stolen, is a classic case of Probable Cause. For several years we were experiencing problems with U-Haul's being stolen in the Baton Rouge, and surrounding area. The watch is still on all rental trucks, especially after 9/11. May I also suggest if you need to drive a Rental Truck, that you not wrap you wet hair, or you head with a white towel, it makes the Rookies nervous. :D

I'm enjoying this thread, we are only trying to do what is expected of us. Sometimes, with us being human, and making mistakes also, it does provide some funny, and memerable stories. :D

There are some good stories here about meetings with cops and there is a flip side.
You ought to hear some of the stories we share with each other at shift change about encounters with everyday type people
