Well I figure ill start a new thread rather than bringing an old one back. If you don't remember my hpdi is having problems starting on the water. It starts fine on the hose but wont start on the water. It is also not reaching wot rpms. I eventually brought the boat in to another, more reputable Yamaha tech. After a week in the shop he thinks he narrowed it down to something between the power head and lower unit. When in his test tank the motor wont start. When he removes the lower unit it does. He put another lower unit on just to make sure mine isn't the problem. It does the same thing. His theory is something is blocking the exhaust and creating too much back pressure. This would also cause my low rpms at wot. This is all going back to when the motor was rebuilt. It hasn't been right since. What do you guys think? Does it sound like he is on the right track? Is this a plausible diagnosis? He should be pulling the powerhead any day now and then I should know more.

Re: update 150 hpdi wont start and low top end

Had a problem with a Merc Racing EFI, some jackwagon put the wrong gasket on the tuning adapter causing problems cooling the pwrhead at higher RPM's. Man that thing kicked my @ss!!! After pulling the pwrhead the third time decided I was going to have to eat this one bigtime found that the adapter plate gasket was the wrong p/n by holding on top of the old one. So yeah tuning is a big part of 2 strokes, what happens is the sonic wave can actually prevent the exhaust pressure from leaving the exhaust port efficiently. If you have ever seen championship loggers with those hi performance chainsaws with the huge dirtbike exhaust manifold.

I have never seen an outboard with good compression that would not start just from the back pressure caused by being set in water.

As with all motors when starting to troubleshoot do the basics up front like compression, spark, timing, and fuel pressures. Check for any codes.
The Yamaha tech should have done this testing also.
Give all this data to the forum along with some history on the motor. other wise it is a waste of your and our time

Come to think of it niether have I...especially in a test tank where the water is not going to be as high as in the water so don't pay much attention to what I said earlier.

Re: update 150 hpdi wont start and low top end

Ok so was finally able to talk to the mechanic again. He has been working on it between other jobs so it took a while. After pulling the head, inspecting the exhaust, and checking just about eveything else he could think of, he still has no answers. He is now thinking it might be an issue with the ignition system, although everyhing is to spec. He thinks it might be getting weak spark that isn't showing up on the ecu. This is just one theory. I guess this motor should have updated coils, plugs, and ecu. He wants to tear the whole motor apart and assemble it back together to make sure everything is correct. The next step is to contact the shop that did the rebuild and see what they are willing to do. Any advice or opinions are more then welcome. How do I go about dealing with the shop when I call them?

I came across a problem similar to yours.
The motor had a couple of hours on it fresh
from a re-man shop .
The block was bored .030 and they installed
standard pistons. Warranty covered but I new
the owner.
Some rebuilders will void the warranty
if anyone has been in the motor.
If they installed something wrong
hopefully they will take care of it.
How long is there warranty?
Keep track of all troubleshooting records.
What were the VST pump & high pressure
fuel pump readings, compression, low
and high speed timing, anything you can
Come up with may help

He thinks it might be getting weak spark
that is not showing up on the ECU?
Was this done with laptop?
