Hi all,

This leads on from my earlier post here:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=428984&highlight=oil+lower+gear+unit+evinrude+water

But as its a completely new question I thought I'd make a new post, I hope that's ok with the mods?

I wanted to ask if a failed seal here:

attachment.php

Could be causing water to get into my LU? The seal is completely shot. I also noticed that the inner walls of the engine here (I guess the LU walls, or the Middle Unit?) are covered in a greeny emulsified oil, which I have previously noticed leaking out of a small hole on the bottom of the LU. Another post informed me that this was unburnt fuel/oil and not to worry, so I haven't. Is this part of the exhaust system, or should it be good and clean in there?

My main question is, will this seal stop water getting into my LU, and does anyone have a part no. or even a name for the seal so I can order one?

Thanks a lot for looking everyone,

Edd

All I see is the dreaded little red X.

The exhaust housing normally is a nasty place.

Very difficult without the picture.

You should be able to identify the seal in the parts catalog HERE

If you cannot sort out your attachment tell us the page number and reference number for it.

Blast, sorry all, I thought I followed the iBoats guide to uploading pictures. But apparently not. So the seal I am talking about should be here now as a thumbnail?

Vic, thank you so much for that parts catalogue! Can I view that indefinitely, will be a huge help for ordering parts. The seal I am after is the Exhaust Housing Cover Plate Gasket, p/no 305299. Is this no. likely to have changed?

So will replacing this gasket stop water getting into the LU? Or is there another likely culprit, as I've already done the drain/fill screws.

Many thanks again

That gasket just seals the exhaust housing, stops exhaust from escaping before it gets to the lower unit, it will not have any effect on the lower unit.

305299 is still a good number.
If you are trying to reseal your lower unit you will need the following items from the parts breakdown that Vic.s refered you to.
#'s 29,27,35,38,52,43, and part number 311598 that goes on #39.
If you do some research I beleave you can get just the seals for #27, hard to replace just the seals, but can be done.
