Hello everyone.

I need to replace a couple of the snaps on the boat that the cover attaches to. I bought replacement snaps which are a snap attached to a screw. I will need to drill a small hole into the fiberglass to insert the new snap.

Also there is a small hole where the original snap broke off. This suggest that the snap was held in by a screw or stem of some sort as well which I imagine needs to be removed before the replacement snap is installed.

Anyone done this? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Also as far as installing the snaps I believe that there is a technique for drilling into the gelcoat without causing it to chip or crack. Anyone familiar with this technique?

Thanks

Here is a quicky from me ..

Yes .. using a countersink bit to just break through the gel should be done to prevent cracking ( I should amend my post ).

Your small hole Might be from a rivet snap ? got pics ?

I find the easy way is to drill your hole, then use a fillips bit in your drill and use that for your counter sink.

Re: How do I replace the snaps for the playpen cover?

Hello Everyone,

Here's a pic of one of the broken snaps and the replacement snap that I plan to use. Notice the hole where the original snap broke off. It appears that there was some type of stem. Was it a rivet or a stem like the replacement snap? For the playpen to fit properly the new snap needs to go where the old one was. Any suggestions on drilling and replacing?

Thanks,
Paul Bolden

It turned out to be an easy fix. I used a carbide drill bit smaller than the hole to clear it out. I placed a piece of tape over the hole and then drilled it a little larger to accommodate the stud on the new snap. I placed a little marine grade sealant on the snap's threads and carefully screwed the new snap back into place.
