1984 Johnson 9.9 J10RCRA was pissing very hot water. Just replaced entire water pump system 5 hours of use ago. Several of you suggested a possible tstat issue, so I removed thermostat (royal pain in the ***** on this year) and replaced the water cover and started it up w/o tstat and still pissing water hot as hell within 30 seconds. Tstat did not look corroded or all gummed up. Water passages under the cover had some crystals; looked pretty dry in there. THe motor is not used in salt water.

SO where from here? Shall I try running without the water cover as well to see if water is getting up? I have strong suspicions that it is not. Please help. Im a novice and frustrated.

If it is peeing water it has to be getting water up to the cylinders. I guess I would look at all the water passages and find where it is plugged.

At this point I would drop the leg and connect a garden hose to the water tube. Pull that water plate off the back and see what happens. Many have said the rubber grommet at the top of the water tube can collapse and stop the water flow as well. Try blowing (with your lungs) air up the water tube as well. If it is difficult then the rubber is likely collapsed which will mean pulling the power head to get at it. Best of luck. Rick.

One would think- If the upper grommet were collapsed the "flow" out the tell tale would almost be non existant. You should notice water spurting out of the ports at the top of the leg, if not you have a possible blockage in the powerhead. Were the pump vanes in tact from the old impeller?

Another possibility is a head gasket being blown between water passages allowing water to kinda loop in the powerhead for to long allowing it to get hot. Not very common BUT I have personally seen this happen.
