I am upgrading my 1987 150 Carbed engine (Shift Rod is shot) to a 2003 HPDI that is new - They have told me that they may be able to use existing Binnacle, Shift cables, key set up, and Tach, Oil Tank, etc - Basically just swap out the engine - Does this make sense? It is all original equipment from 1987, and appears to be in great shape - I am not trying to cut corners - but will this work, and be a reliable solution - Please advise.

Rob Allen

the oil tank will be cut and paste somewhat due to different wiring plugs. the tach warniings will also be some cut and paste. make sure your fuel system is in good shape and your battery is at least 600 CCA.

the tach will not work correctly at all
the trim harness is all wrong. I would not risk an engine that expensive with antique rigging. the binnicle and cables will work ok. the keyswitch will as well. about 01 yamaha motors all went to a two wire trim sender that is not compatible with older tachs,if you must reuse the oil tank at least remove it and clean it and install a new filter in it. take my advice, rig it once rig it right and it may live.

ill tell ya the outcome. if its cut pasted and patched together saltwater will nab it. the HPDI is a difficult motor to keep alive when all is new. but do as you need. benC kinda told ya. if they do it purchase the correct harness adapters and tach. dont let anyone start cutting and splicing.

Rodbolt & Ben -

I will request that they rig it all new - that way - if there are any problems(I certainly hope that there will not be any), we will have eliminated the weaker links in the chain - The idea is to not lose time on the water if we can help it - especially to things that could be avoided - I truly appreciate your input - Great forum!

Rob Allen

I'm also thinking of doing a repower to an HPDI (200 in my case) Is there something I should know about HPDI reliability?

Care to elaborate a little more? Is it more difficult to keep alive than the Optimax or Ficht/DI motors?
And what is it that usually kills them, saltwater killing the complicated electronics?

lack of correct maintenance. there are a few items people shy away from doing as per the maintenence schedule that will bite you on the behind later.

i like the hpdi i think they are nice motors, but dont cut corners on service.

If you're spending that much money on a new motor then no, it doesn't make sense to try and recycle nearly 20 year old external equipment.

Save yourself the aggravation. Buy all that stuff you need new.

use the latest6y5-8350t-82-00 tach. it also incorperates the hour meter to use this tach in a 94 and older rig will require adapter6y5-85335-00-00 the older 6y5-8350t-81-00 tach will work as well

rodbolt -

You are very generous with your knowledge - Thank you -

So - do both Tach choices need the adapter since the Engine is a 2003?

Rob

the dash 81 tach will work out of the box as long as the dip switches are set for 2 stroke,12 pole and 2 wire trim. the instructions are on a tag attached to the carb. most come set for 4 stroke,12 pole and 2 wire trim from the factory but always check the settings. bites many techs

Is my best bet to also replace the Key switch and the current binnacle control (I have the 704 - but it is 18 years old)The two control cables are only two years old - so they should be fine.

I will be putting in a brand new oil tank, replacing Fuel Fill hose, supply hose, and vent hose as well.- and of course new filter.

I am also replacing the steering cable with a new non feedback (not sure I want to go the whole Hydraulic route) - the current cable/helm has some play in it and it is also 18 years old - Not afraid to spend a little money to prevent stuff from going wrong in the near future....

Any other suggestions...

Rob

the keyswitch and main harness will work. you wont need the choke switch. make sure the alarm horn is operational. you will need new harnesses for the oil tank, alarm and trim indicate. they sell a little rigging kit with the tach that is actually cheaper than just the tach.new is usually better but not seeing your current stuff its hard to tell about corrosion issues. make sure you use a 10 micron water seperator filter. can be yamaha or racor or anyother make as long as its 10 micron. the oil tank kit should have the fuel primer and hose as well as the oil tank harness.in the rigging manual you will see what each kit and the motor actually come with. some dealers try to sell you stuff the engine actually came with. its not right but it happens.
