Hello All,

Thanks for taking a look at my question.
I have my alpha gen 2 drive split to do an impeller service. The surface where the two drive halves meet as well as areas under where the water pump housing sits, has some paint peeling/peeled off.
I would like to know what I need to do to the surfaces before putting the water housing on and the drive back together.
Do I scrape, sand, prime, paint? Flake off loose paint and then use gasket sealant? or clean and use grease? some combination of these?

Thanks for you time.

Have you looked at the manual? It will make recommendation on where to use gasket sealers and what type of sealer. Often, Mercruiser recommends some sort or Merc/Quicksilver product. But asking here will get you equivalents from the auto parts store.

I would not be worried about missing paint where you can't see it unless you boating in salty water. You can sand off the corrosion, prime and paint. Gotta use a primer made to stick to aluminum.

I wasn't able to source the materials listed in the manual.
After cleaning the corrosion off with a brass wire brush I used Interlux Primocon to prime my drives last year. Topped it with Moeller Phantom Black rattle can. I'm happy with the result.

I don't think you want to use a brass brush, may get some particles and create a little battery cell, but since painted unlikely. I use the quicksilver phantom black paint. For a rattle can it does exceptionally well. NOTHING compares with factory paint. One thing with the quicksilver is I find I paint, I let dry for days, I assemble then when i disassemble a year later or more it yanks the paint off the mating surface and if you on bell housing gasket surface you will spend hours getting the old gasket off and be to bare aluminum when done. I suggest Moeller zinc based primer for aluminum finished followed with Moeller phantom. the oxide you see (white powder) is protecting the aluminum as much as any primer but looks ugly. Truth be told your find doing nothing.
