Good Morning!
It's been a while since I've been around here... been actually working on the unit!
I am working on the lower unit of a '62 Lark 40hp evinrude but I have seen alot of other motors with this configuration (upper and lower pinion bearings).
The needle bearings of the upper are frozen. I have been using penetrant and various other liquids and am stating to get 'em moving but theyu got a long way to go to spin freely.
You will notice from my clips that the pinion gear got pretty ate up from this.
I have seen guys some say to leave it.
The big lower bearing is fine. Does the smaller upper bearing play a major role? It's doesn't really spin all that great new so I am wondering what the heck the point is... but it's a $13 bearing so I could go ahead (but it's pressed in uggg).
Does anyone know a trick to get it freed up?
Can I use a puller to remove? How would I go about this?
Can I use a brass punch to install a new one?
Any feedback greatly appreciated. Thanks!
