Hi, Dave.

Welcome to iboats. :)

I think so, Dave.

Garmin Customer Service (the best there is, in my opinion) can give you details. http://www.garmin.com/

There are European City Select maps available for my Garmin 276C, so I think they can do the same for the 172C and 182C as well.

Good luck. :)

I agree with JB. It will use the same satellites in Europe as it uses here. Your base map may not be as detailed but as far as finding your location it will work. You will want to re intiilize your location with a basic location to speed it finding a fix.

Garmin UK told me that these units would have an American base map and this cannot be changed so does this mean that if I dont have a pre programmed Data card for my area in the unit in Ireland that the base map will only show the US on it.

i have an american garmin gps, i use it for road navigation as well, the american base maps cannot be changed, and that leaves limited memory for you to add other maps. depends on what you want to add to it. in my case i cannot fit the whole uk on there so i have to put on the bits i need, which can be a bit frustrating
