US Virgin Islands Needs In/out Mechanics!

Hey Guys,

I have a charter company in the USVI, and I have a hard time getting mechanics to work on my boat. It seams like all the mechanics here work on outboard or diesel - only a couple in/out gas engine guys, and they are expensive, and really busy. Seriously, any of you Volvo and/or Merc mechanics who are not liking where you live or what you're being paid, you need to relocate to the Virgin Islands, in the Caribbean, and make some real money. I'll be your first customer!

Welcome to iboats! Why don't you get a copy of a factory manual and work on your own rig! Then you could work on your friends boats too. Sounds like a great spot for a vacation though...

Lived there on St. Thomas (East end) 12 years ago and you are right, no good mechanics available or too expensive when they were. A big problem was getting parts, also. I made a bundle working on I/O's / gas engines on the side. If I wasn't married, would still be there, as wife is a NY girl and hated island life.

Still keep my St. Thomas driver's license in wallet, just for proof of living there, cause no one believes I was there and actually left. LOL.

Hmm, I spent a couple weeks on St. Thomas a while back and almost didn't get on the plane when it was time to leave, I liked it so much.

Maybe I should get out of the Army, and use my GI Bill to attend MMI for a bit, then go split my time fixing I/O's and drinking on the beach? ;)

Actually, the parts situation is better...it's the shipping that is a pain in the butt...Maybe you should come down for a "working vacation" sometime?

Just be sure you do those in that order...fix I/Os and THEN drink on the beach!

Maybe as a marketing/face guy, you need to work out a barter deal with one of the mechanics. Take his family out when boat time is slow or take him on fishing trips. You could probably work out a mutual deal with someone to help cut your repair bills.

That's a good idea, but they have access to boats all the time...I've tried.
