Re: USA Basketball

They removed the amateur clause in 1976, I believe.

The big problem with the American team is that they don't show good passes, a well set screen, and other fundamentals of the game on sportscenter.

They show dunks. That's what we practice. Our only hope is to export "sportscenter" to the rest of the world, and level the playing field.

Re: USA Basketball

The international game is different from the NBA game. The international game stresses fundamentals, moving without the ball, passing, and outside shooting.

The NBA game is more one on one, the point gaurd drives to the hole, makes the D commit and either dishes a pass or shoots the rock.

The NBA guys are used to playing against a man to man defense, they play mostly zone in the olympics where you have to be able to knock down the open J to spread the zone. If you don't spread the zone you will have no penetration to the basket. Its an easy game, it's just that our atheletes have lost touch with the fundamentals.

Having our rear ends handed to us a few times in Athens is going to be a good thing. It will make us re-vamp our international team and game strategy.

I hope so... the sooner Tubby is gone, the better. Then again, maybe not. I don't see any other coaches out there right now that I'd like to see come to UK besides Rick and that just ain't gonna happen... maybe Billy Donovan?

Tubby over-coaches during a game, too much of a system for subbing, who cares if someone is on fire out there. Pull them out just because it's time to. There's a reason there is no chemistry on the court with the Cats and that's a big part of it. His press is a joke. Billy and Rick's style of ball would do so much better at a school with the name that Kentucky has. Heck, I'm surprised we're not losing recruits to Timbucktoo School for the Blind with the way things are.

Anyway, to make this post somewhat on topic... How about sending the college coaches like Coach K or Rick to the olympics along with a group of the best team players throughout the country. I agree, get the pros out... at least in basketball. I still see a love of the game and country for other sports like tennis and soccer. You have to love that US women's soccer team.

Re: USA Basketball

Somebody mark the calendar, I agree with PW2! ;)

The fundamentals of basketball are definitely lacking with this team. I honestly believe there is only one person on this team that really knows how the game is supposed to be played, and thats Tim Duncan. Unfortunately, every team that plays the U.S. is gonna pack the defense down in the paint in an effort to keep the ball outta his hands. One on one, I believe he's the best player in the olympics.

It just kills me how many of these overpaid babies don't think its worth their time to represent their country. It should be looked at as a privledge, not a burden.
At least the fella's that are there felt it was a worthwhile cause.

I really don't know what the solution is. Maybe they should assemble the team much sooner, so that they can practice together longer. The international game is much different, and its obvious our guys are not used to it.
Also, maybe the team should be made up of 1/2 Pros, and 1/2 amateurs. There are many things that could be done.

Coach, i'm just bustin your chops. Tubby really doesn't do bad, and they have a heck of a recruiting class coming in.
Being a Cardinal fan, I can never agree with a Cat fan. :p

Re: USA Basketball

How come Puerto Rico gets an Olympic team? Since Puerto Rico is a territory (or commonwealth) of the U.S., shouldn't Texas (or any other state) be allowed to field their own team?
