used boat question

I am considering buying a 1986 19' cobia bowrider(my first boat). The current owner says it needs a new boot, and that after it has run for approx 30-45 minutes the engine bogs down. After letting it cool it will then run normal again till it heats up and then bogs down again. does anyone know what this could be and whether or not it would be expensive to fix?

Re: used boat question

I would recommend getting a mechanic to look at it before buying, or get a full survey. Press the seller for analyses he might have had, repairs made, etc. There is nothing wrong with buying a boat with a problem, as long as the price is right and you know what the problem is (and the cost to fix).

Re: used boat question

Oldboat is right about the survey or at least a mechanic if the boat is not valuable enough. I am from Atlanta also and I would recommend Dekalb Marine on Glenwood road. These guys have a lot of experience with older boats and would spot any problems then quote your repair co$t on the spot. Check www.nada.com for average value on the boat then use the repair cost to adjust your offer.<br />Good luck.
