Used boats and me

I figured I would start my own thread instead of hijacking an existing one (Buying a Winterized Boat?).

When I was younger, in my teens I was boat crazy. I built two boats and was captain of my father’s boat as he never used it. All of these boats were taken care of and fixed when in need, why not doesn’t everyone? When I turned 20 I was on my own and boating was a distant past until I hit my late fifty’s and situations changed. I got boat fever and bought a 26ft Welcraft, bad move as it was too big to trailer and keep in my driveway. My wife it turns out does not like boating. The motor seized in the boat. Fortunately was able to sell it for what I paid for it. Did I mention boat fever, the same week I sold the boat I bought a replacement, six months later I was looking for a new boat due to motor and rot problems. I think in my case all I wanted was a boat and did not look long enough and moved to fast. I think my problem was I thought everyone took care of their boats and was I wrong. There is a good ending here, I got tired of other peoples poorly kept boats and bought brand new and take meticulous care of it. This boat starts first time every time. Everything works, its dry and my wife is starting to think about boating with me.

No real story here other than to say the advice and knowledge here may save some bad purchases and possibly some upset better halves.

Thanks people.

Most important is that your wife is starting to warm up to boating. Sometimes there are underlying issues beyond just the boat, such as fear of drowning, not knowing how to swim, sea sickness, etc. Hopefully all she needed was a new boat!

LOL, I think she was more afraid of the boat not starting and floating helplessly in the middle of Lake Ontario, but you are right

Consider joining a boat owner's association (of the U S) that can include towing for pretty cheap. That might help the Admiral fell better about going out on the boat.

I'm in Canada, we can get boaters insurance but not for my lake as we longer boat on Lake Ontario. We were fortunate enough to purchase a cottage with lake front, long story there. I am sure its the same in the US but here its law that you stop and assist a stranded boater, as it should be.
