I found out my 5.0 is having some head issues, and decided at this point to repower with a 5.7. Any thoughts on used Mercruiser CPO engines vs a new service replacement long block vs having a local shop rebuild one for me? Here are my options locally...

Mercruiser CPO long block $2000

Mercruiser service long block $2700

find a core and rebuild it locally.... hard to nail down, but thinking anywhere from 1600-2200 depening on core condition.

I like the idea of a new engine since we are going to the trouble of doing it, but the used takeout with 1 year warranty sounds appealing to. I was told they were low hour take-outs when customers upgraded to 383 that were on special.

Last option would be reman, I have seen several sites (ebasicpower, usengines, etc) online offering reman-ed marine engines, any thoughts or reccomendations on any that are reliable. Seems like most times, for every good review you hear one bad, and based on the past I have mixed feelings on these places with auto engines anyway. Rather spend a little extra and have somebody I feel comfortable with localy do it. Most of the reman's were around 2000-2200 + freight at which point gets real close the new service replacement longblock.
