Re: User Manual for 1992 Johnson 90hp
your service manual should cover, proper starting procedure. the rest of the user manual is BS.
Actually, not true in my opinion.
I always buy an owner's manual for the old outboards I buy. They are far more useful for the normal user than the service manual. They tell you the basics about the engine, fuel and oil, start procedure, spring and fall maintenance, specs for common user-replaced parts, etc. etc.. This information is formated for easy use by the typical owner/operater with the right amount of detail.
I also have service manuals for these engines, but there is actually very little in there that I use, because I'm a very poor and uninterested mechanic. I am a very good and interested user though! There is a difference.
The service manual either doesn't have the common, basic information (often - from my experience) or you have to wade through a lot of stuff to get it. The service manual is for people who actually want to fix their engine - which definitely is not the typical owner.
Just like the typical car owner needs the owner's manual to know how to operate everything, service intervals and specs. The typical car owner has absolutely no need for the factory service anual.
I definitely recommend that any typical owner (the great majority!) buy an owner's manual first. Afterall, it is what is given if you buy the motor new, no? The typical owner has a professional shop do anything that the service manual would be good for. That might not be you or many/most of the common iboats posters, but it is far more common among the boating public.
To OP: check ebay. Also look for an ebay seller called searayman13 and contact him - he's got a lot of used manuals in stock, many not listed on ebay. I've bought a couple from him and he's very good. If you can't find a used one, go to kencook.com and buy a new one. It will cost you more, but you won't spend a lot of time looking for it. I've done that too and have been very happy.
