USPS Boating Coarse

I want to get started in boating and I have been told that the first thing I should do is take the USPS boating coarse. Once I have that and I take the exam and (hopefully) pass it, I would get a license enabling me to operate a power boat. My question is... I live in PR... and there are no online coarses offered for this region. Are the licenses state specific? Or if a person takes an exam from say FL (available online) will he/she be able to use that license to operate a boat in another area?

I just like the convinience of taking the coarse at my own pace and not be tied to going to a classroom every week (my schedule is harsh at times).

I can not answer your question and have no idea where PR is. Here In California You do not need any licence to operate a boat. However I have taken the US Coast Guard and the US power squradons class 3 times each. For a new boater I think the US Coast Guard class is a little better. My entire crew has taken and passed the US Coast Guard class. I think more insurance companies give give discounts for the Coast Guard class than for the Power Squdrons. I also think US Coast Guard class has better information on saftey, Required Equipment, and aids to navigation.

Yes your can learn the basic form a book but you will learn a lot more from going to class. In fact take your whole Family, it could save your life when you have a heart attack or fall over board. Coast Guard and Power Squdrons both have 13 week classes and 9 week classes. You will learn a lot more from the 13 week class. When you go to class you may take the same class as on line but you will have instructers and other long time boater in the class that will point out the really important stuff and help you understand it.

On a rough windy day in ocean or large lake if someone falls over board everyone on board needs to know what to do, the life of the person in the water depends on it. Sure if your rafting on calm warm water lake and a good swimmer falls over board everyone will have fun with it then someone will stick out a paddle or swimmer will swim to the raft and get on board. Whole different matter if your in a boat going 40 MPH and make a turn and someone gets off ballance bangs their head and breaks a arm when they hit the back of the boat and end up in 40 degree water with no lifejacket and can't swim. Winds blowing blowing 30 plus and big chop or swells. Person in the water life depends on everyone in the boat knowing exactly what to do in about 10 seconds. You will not get that information from an online boating class.

Here in PR you do not need a license if you were born prior to 1972. I totally agree with you... taking the class will be a valuable experience and I plan to take all the courses the Power Squadron offers here locally... I was just wondering if the "license required course" could be streamlined so that at least I can start looking for a boat. The next coarse starts today but I will not be in town for the majority of June... so I can't really take the coarse now.
