I have a 1978 140 V-4 that isn't far from ready...have to get the gremlins out of my electronics when I get back from the Arkansas State Fair...was wondering about what other 140, 120, 115, 90, 88, 85's...what kind of performance do you get from them stock?? What are you pushing?? What props are you using with your motor?? I like reading about what other people get out of their engines so I can compare and contrast. Pics of them running would be nice too...love the look of the "fat" outboards! Thanks!:D

My 96 130HP pushes a loaded weight of 2700# up to 42 mph with a 21" aluminum prop. Never strains and actually launches the 21 foot crestliner out of the water.

When we ran the V4 crossflow on the 15 Allison it'd run about 74. The best I ever saw was just under 76. One guy I beat swears he ran 80 but maybe that was behind his truck.....

When we ran the V4 looper it ran 82 in the 1/4 mile.

Re: V-4 performance...what do you get??

Cant help on a crossflow but my V4 looper on the outfit in my signature runs around 45 - 48 mph with a 14 inch diameter X 19 inch pitch 3 blade aluminum OMC prop.
With a 14 inch X 17 inch pitch it runs the same speed at 6,100 rpm compared to 5,400 rpm with the 19 inch pitch.
Have not tried any other combinations but plan to in the spring.
Any suggestions ????

Re: V-4 performance...what do you get??

I'm hoping to get 5500 rpm wot with a 21 on my ranger...don't know if it will or not. I have a guy here that will let me borrow props to find the right one..so thats really nice. Since we are talking a bit about props and RPM and speed...my manual says 5000 is the sweet spot that these engines fall off after that...well everything I've read says at least 5500 to keep from coking up...of course I'll decarb, but are ya'll setting up different than the manual with timing or such...or does the manual not state the poetntial of these engines?? just wondering...or is it that if wot is at 5500 or so and your cruise around 4800 to 5000 then your in the engines sweet spot and the engine will be laboring less thus less coking?? just want to set up for the best all around perfomance and reliability. DHadley...on the average how much do those hulls weigh that you run? I know they are pretty light..I'm not familar with those "croch rockets" of the boat world...I don't know if I am brave enough to stay in one...some of the pics I've seen of those on this forum are just awsome...ecspecially with the older engines on them. All I know about are bass hulls and aluminum boats..lol. I'm supposed to be weighing around 1100 so we'll see what it'll do. :D

Re: V-4 performance...what do you get??

Here's my '73 85 at WOT. Pushes the hell out of my 16' Starcraft. I paid $200 for my boat. When the friend who sold it to me told me about it I was pretty happy when I heard it was an aluminum hull. Then I went to look at it and saw that big Johnson hanging on the back and I was said SOLD! I just installed a speedometer this year which I'm sure is incredibly inaccurate and it says I'm hitting 38 with just me in the boat. at about 5200 RPM. I'd like to verify it with a GPS. I repainted and put new decals on the cowl this past spring.

Re: V-4 performance...what do you get??

I've had several crossflows.

1973-85 HP w/TNT-18' Starcraft Alum. 38 MPH @ 5200 15" Prop.

1984-90 HP w/TNT-16' Alumacraft Alum. 47 MPH @ 5800 17" Prop

1989-90 HP W/TNT-17' Lowe Aluminum. 43 MPH @ 5600 17" Prop

1994-88 HP w/TNT-24' Starcraft Pontoon. 26 MPH @ 5600 12" Prop.

All those above are with a very light load as I remember.

I probably could have gone with a 19" prop on the Alumacraft. The holeshot was AWESOME.

IMHO, the lower HP Crossflow V-4's were some of the most bulletproof engines made-EVER. The 85 HP we owned was truly bulletproof. It pulled skiers-HARD-for most of its over 1000 hours that we owned it. But. gas was 32 cent a gallon then and we used LOTS of it. It would outpull every engine, on the lake, in a similar HP class.

The 90 HP on the Lowe was also a great one. I put over 600 hours on it over a seven year period. I was, originally, worried about that one. I bought it new and it didn't run/idle/start right. Under close inspection, almost every bolt on that engine had the paint broken. I thought-oh great! The dealer was of NO help. After a long battle, the dealer gave me a 1 + 2OMC extended coverage plan. Never had to use it.

I eventually (first year) fixed it by rebuilding the carbs and setting the float levels and timing right with the help of an old dealer freind I used to work for. It was great after that. No issues from that point. It was also a stump puller.

Yes I did. The seller was nana1802. I was VERY pleased with what I got from her and the service was great. Look up eBay item #160166558912 for one of her auctions.

Re: V-4 performance...what do you get??

On my 1989 Larson Senza 165 Closed Bow 1050lb's dry with a 1993 Looper 120 Rude Engine and a Raker 18p SS prop I am getting 48mph on GPS at 5550rpm @ WOT trimmed up.

I know I could hit 60mph with this boat and I will once I get a Hydraulic Jackplate, Anti Feedback steering, low water pickup, nosecone and different prop. With the 18p raker the boat jumps out of the water. I can actually make the hole boat jump right out of the water.
