I have a 96 Evinrude 112 special.. I blew at least one piston and scarred the cylinder bad. I have found a running 82 johnson V4 140. The blocks look the same. Crossflow bubblebacks. My boat has to have the extra long shaft. And the 140 is just a long shaft. So I was hoping I could swap the blocks. Can this be done

Lots of subtle differences. Might be able to make it work, though, but it'll take some mixing and matching. I believe they moved the driveshaft seal from the driveshaft to the lower main bearing cap at some point between '82 and '96. Ignitions are different, .ie 82 has two power packs, '96 has one - bosses for mounting may or may not be there. Might be better in the long run to simply rebuild the '96.

Found a " running " motor.----What does that mean.------Most of these V-4 blocks have the same issues.----That is broken piston rings.---Rebuild the 112 model and you will know what you have.

The 140 is a running working outboard. I just need a extra long shaft instead of the long... when I looked the powerhead look very close to mone just didnt know if I could swap them as a temporary and less expensive alternative. Trying to save the last two months of the season. Wont have the money to rebuild until tax time. Thanks for the replies guys sounds like more work than its worth.

????----I guess many folks think that when a motor " runs " then there is nothing wrong with it !

I learned the hard RACERONE. When 112 went I didnt know... it ran in my drive way. Had a little miss to it but I didnt seem bad... thought a little adjustment with the carb or check coil packs... I am honestly ignorant when it comes to motors and things. Seen I had a water drip that I didnt have before. Was told head gasket need replaced but when we took them apart found the piston and cylinder problem

The exhaust adapters are a different part number and so is the powerhead base gasket. The powerheads may not interchange for those reasons. You'd also want to check the drive shaft splines...

????????----Powerhead gasket is the same for both blocks !!!!--------Driveshaft spline is the same too.---------There may be issues with the driveshaft spline fitting all the way into the crankshaft.

The drive shafts are different lengths, the change was made around 92', so you need a different extra longshaft drive shaft than the one you have now. Finding a used XL shaft could be difficult, new can be costly.

Racerone, you are correct the base gasket from the 82, pn 321727 actually supercedes to the 342513 base gasket on the 96. Same difference.
