V4 Johnson & Evinrude engine cowl. What years are interchangeable?

I have a 1985 Johnson 115 V4 and after spending several days restoring and repainting the engine cowl (cover/hood) I managed to knock it over and it fell to the concrete driveway and cracked it down the corner. I decided not to fix it and to get another one. Luckily I hadn't put the new decals on it yet. I was just wondering what other years are interchangeable with it? I know the ones for the 60 degree V4's wont fit but what about the last few years of the SPL engines? Will they fit? I know they use the same engine cowl seal but don't know if the dimensions are exactly the same or if the latches will line up with the 1985 lower cowl.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Crossflow V4 cowlings from about 1974 on up will fit. They did have several variations in cowling shapes, but the footprint was the same right through the end of their run of the crossflows. I put a 1976 cover on my 1983 so that it would match the year of my 1976 boat...

I also have a cowl and carbs from a 1982 Johnson 150 just sitting in my shed and have thought about placing an ad on craigslist offering them for trade on a V4 cowl. Not sure how good that would go. I'm pretty sure I will just end up buying one. I have seen several '97 or '98 Johnson/Evinrude 115 & 90 SPL engine cowls for sale locally as well as a late 80's 88hp SPL cowl. I did just sell the 1966 Evinrude 60hp SportFour that originally came on my boat so that will help some.

You were right. I purchased a cowl from a 1996 Johnson 88hp SPL and it fit my 1985 Johnson 115 perfectly. Now I just have to paint it and put the '97-'98 Johnson 115 SPL decals on it. I may wait until this winter to do that. It looks okay as is for right now.
