I bought a 2019 chaparral boat new with Volvo Penta v6-240 engine. It has very low hours on the engine and boat. Last summer, I started having engine start problem. It seems the engine starts up but then shuts down immediately. First few times when it happened, I kept trying and after a few times the engine will keep running. Once it's warmed up I have no problem to start again. On second day it works fine. But if I leave it untouched for a week, then I run into the problem again. But after a few weeks, I found that repeated tries did not succeed anymore. So I made an appointment with dealer for dockside service. The day before the appointment, I tried again but magically I was able to start the engine just fine. So I canceled the appointment. The engine/boat has been working fine until a few days ago -- even after a long winter with winterization etc. I was able to start the engine just fine when I used it the first time in late spring.

However, to my disappointment, a few days ago the problem came back! The engine seems to be started and running for a few seconds then it shuts down. I tried a few times and had no luck to keep it running. Is it some sort of sensor problem? How can I diagnose and fix this problem?

Any tip/suggestion is highly appreciated!

My knowledge on engine is fairly limited. The exact model is Volvo Penta v6-240-m. One of the manuals mentioned EFI and Electrical Fuel Pumps so I assume it's more likely to be EFI? This Youtube video
reviewed a similar v6-240 engine (which might be slightly different) and mentioned "it has direct injection and variable valve timing".

That boat has an interesting design, good accessiblity for the engine compared to some BUT, I'd be worried about that rear hatch popping open and flooding the bilge with water!

The boat in the Youtube video is DIFFERENT from mine. It has a similar engine as mine -- the reason I put a link there is trying to answer the question on the type of engine asked by Bondo.

Ayuh,.... Interestin' motor,..... I'm sure it's electronic controlled,...
That means ya usually need a man with a 'puter, 'n who knows how to use it,....

From the basic mechanical stand point, I suggest you pull the fuel filter, 'n examine it's contents in a clear vessel, for anything but clean fresh gasoline,......
Then pop on a new filter, 'n try it,.....

Crap in the gas is a very common boatin' Issue,.....
Checkin' the contents is a Great diagnostic tool, rather than just tossin' it into the trash,....
