v6 80's evinrude electrical question

Friend just got, what I am guessing, a mid 80's V6 175 hp evinrude. It has a dark blow cowling if that helps. The wiring was all corroded on the terminal strip and the color coding label was missing. <br /><br /><br />What we have done so far:<br />The two yellow wires from the stator hit the terminal strip where two other yellow wires run up to rect/reg behind the flywheel. From the rect/reg. a red wire runs to the starting solenoid and another wire runs back down to the terminal strip which connects to the tach sender.<br /><br />Question:<br />There are also two red wires to be connected to the terminal strip. The fused one runs to the starting solenoid. The other runs to some "black box" unit near the exhaust plate/cover, maybe a warning module of some sort?. There are also two purple wires. One of the purple wires seems "tanner" than the other purple wire but it could just be serverly faded. How do these last four wires connect up?<br /><br />Thanks-<br />andy

does that black box have a bunch of wires running in and out that are green,blue red tan and a few other colors? if so thats the trim relay box. <br /> on that motor the yellow wire are ac to the rectifier, it may have a jumper for the gray tach lead.<br /> red is 12v+ red with a purple tracer is fused 12V+, purple is key on 12V + and purple/white is choke.<br /> some of the regulater/rectifires have a purple wire coming from them for 12Vsense, a red wire for alt output,a gray wire for tach send and a black ground wire. its hard to say without seeing it or at least knowing the model #. sometimes you can say a 87 model and come up with 3 or more versions of an 87 model. each may be slightly different.

Yeah, rodbolt I wish I had a model # for you.<br /><br />-You must be correct about the trim rely box, the setup is as you described.<br /><br />-The rect/reg is also as you decribed.<br /><br />-But how do they connect at the terminal strip? The year of your motor is a 1989. For future reference you can use the following to figure out the year of an OMC engine from the model number.<br /><br />I N T R O D U C E S<br />1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 <br /><br />The 2nd and 3rd last digits in your model are CE thus a 89 model year.<br /><br />Muchco

trim relay box has a red/purple you can take it to red/purple on the strip. if its just red take it to the red terminal on the strip.<br /> after that at the terminal its yellow to yellow. yellow to yellow gray gray from the regulator to gray on the strip. if yours has a gray regulator lead make sure you dont take it to yellow gray, purples all go to purples reds all go to reds. and purple white is for the choke.<br /> purples have key on 12v positive, reds are hot any time the battery is connected, if the fuse aint blown . red/purple indicates fused 12v positive and on some models is only hot with the key one.. yellows come from the stator, at the stip the wires from the regulator will be yellow and yellow/gray. one each to the stator yellows.<br /> from the top it should be. yellow,yellow/gray,gray,red,purple/red and purple.<br /> the exact order does not matter much but the correct color to color does.
