Value of Rebuilt Motors

I just bought a used 1976 16' Arrowglass boat that has a 1983 50hp Johnson o/b on it. I took the boat in to have the motor serviced and found out that it needs a lot of work. There is a mismatched carb. on it and the compression is way off. I was told that it would be more costly to rebuild the engine than to buy another used motor and have it put on. (I'm getting a 2cd opinion on that one).
My question is this: i've been researching used motors and have looked up some values in NADA. However, how would I adjust the value for a motor that has been rebuilt? It would presumably be worth more, right? I'd like to get this whole thing resolved for around $1,000. That means either a rebuild on the Johnson  or a used o/b for approx. $500 + installation.
Any feedback would be appreciated. I've owned a boat before but never one w/ an o/b and never one with "problems".
Thanks!

Re: Value of Rebuilt Motors

surftrish,

Keep in mind that when you look at an older engine's value on NADA the value does not take warranties in mind.

So, an engine with a warranty will be a lot higher than what NADA says.

Also, a good working engine is of much more worth to the boat owner than what NADA lists as well.

When it comes down to it a rebuilt engine is worth a lot more as long as it is backed up by a warranty.

- bayman
