Vaseline in the winter?

This thread is not to debate whether or not Vaseline works to get rid of oxidation or bring back color on old chalky boats. If you don't like it or think we are a bunch of idiots for using it, please feel free to move on to another thread. However, for those of us who use Vaseline a couple times a year to keep our old boats nice and shiny, here is my question.

I understand that Vaseline works best in warm weather when it can bake for a while. I usually let it sit for a couple hours to a day, but I have read of some people leaving it on up to a week.

Has anyone had any success applying Vaseline on your boat in the winter months? If so, in what temperatures? Do you use a heat source to make it work better -- heat lamp, heat gun, etc...?

My boat is already nice and shiny (did it in the summer though). I was just wondering if anyone had tried it in the winter.

I get bored in the winter and over think stuff I guess.

To vaseline without sun baking.

Place vaseline in a Glass Heat resistant pryex bowl. Take heat gun heat up bottom of bowl. Make sure you wear gloves. The bowl gets hot.
Heat vaseline to a watery state. Apply vaseline to boat with cloth. After the vaseline has sat for a couple of hours wipe off excess and buff to a shine. Sun baking not required. You may have to reheat the vasline several times to complete the entire boat.

Make sure you get an adjustable heat gun like at Harbor Freight.

The Looks from your wife or girlfriend as you carry a jar a vasline in your hands is priceless.

Good Luck.

Thanks David. So it is the temp and thinner state of the Vaseline that does the trick rather than the outside temp. Great info.

You are correct SDSeville temp and thinner state does it.

I'm a little obsessive with the Vaseline. I vaseline once a month during the months Mar - Oct. Not so much during the winter, but I use the above method all the time not only I don't need direct sun for the same results, but its easier to apply when heated. Careful with heat gun and hot Vaseline. Dont want you to burn yourself.

BTW Name brand and store brand Vaseline has the same results.

What would happen if you put it on, and just left it there for the winter?

Good question. I know it won't freeze, but it would probably pick up dirt and other junk over a few months.

SDSeville is correct. Let me add a few comments. You do not want to leave the vaseline on thick and put on your boat cover. This will create a mess, and collect dirt, and Grime on your Hull. If you vaseline treat correctly you remove most of the vaseline and buff to a shine so the boat is not greasy to the touch.

Interesting reading.....is this trick for fiberglass boats or does it work on painted aluminium hulls as well? Does it clean or just make things shiny? Thanks

Okay, the Vaseline thing is new to me. Can someone enlighten me on how you apply it? Doesn't your hull get greasy/slippery? How much of it do you need to do your whole boat?

Sham--only use Vaseline as a last ditch try on older- faded ,chalky looking hulls- but it does make it look deeper, richer color and shine.
apply like regular wax. -there are alot of threads on it here.
I used it on my old 1984 Wellcraft boat but my "new" 1981 Glastron is too nice and too much buffing & polishing to dare slather it with the stuff.
The Vaseline would be hard to completely remove- I'll use regular boat wax.View attachment 122829

And so it begins.

My boat has a nice wax Job. I use Vaseline to give it that high gloss shine that I cannot get with boat wax without breaking my back.
My boat is not faded or oxidized.

Pretty common to use it in the winter - it goes on your cheeks to prevent frost bite. On the boat, uh no - wouldn't put it on my truck either. Bacon grease might also make it appear shiny.

Do not use Vaseline on Metal Paint. Fiberglass only.

Re: Vaseline in the winter?

Unlike David's boat, mine was a horrific chalky light pink. I tried all kinds of waxes, polishers, and restorers to no avail. I was ready to start wet sanding or repaint when I read a Vaseline thread and thought -- "what do I have to lose." $2.00 and 30 minutes later my boat was a nice shiny red. I actually waxed over my Vaseline job and it lasted all summer.
