I agree David. Definitely no need to shine her up when she is still under cover. I was thinking more about those who have no off-season, like year-round fishermen or the people who wakeboard and water ski in wetsuits. The water here is in the 50's and I see people wakeboarding almost every day.

I have a wet suit, but it does not get used any more. I am definitely a fair weather boater.

Re: Vaseline in the winter?

I guess the 2 schools of thought as far as vasoline goes is 1) do you prefer to spend the time (or money) to have your boat properly polished and waxed to clean the surface and polish it to shine naturally, or option 2) to use the vasoline,, which i think more than anything just gives the appearance of being clean and shiny......... i dont think there is anything wrong with that,, i guess it all works down to personal preferance ... if all your looking for is a clean and shiny looking boat,, then i guess the vasoline works just great... but if you wanna take the time and get it cleaned up and polished the long and hard way,,, then thats works just great too,,,,,,, me personally i think i would rather take the time and polish it out and wax it,,, no offence to anyone but vasoline seems a bit like sweeping the dirt under the rug,,,, sure the room looks clean,, but is it reallly???

IF you ever try it, you will see vaseline not only makes it shine, but it cleans, and cleans very well. i am amzed at the scuffs and marks it removes. It is NOTHING like sweeping dirt under a rug LOL.

If you enjoy wasting time buffing and polishing then go for it, I prefer to spend my valuable time out on the water ;)

There's no right or wrong way, but so many seem to have a hard on for us vaseline users, it's kind of weird.

Re: Vaseline in the winter?

I know this isn't the place to post this. I am new and unable to post a new thread. It is thanksgiving and My boat is stuck in my driveway because I can't trim the motor up. The fin below the prop is dug into my driveway and I need to manually adjust it ASAP!

It is a 1989 Mercury Black Max 150hp outboard. The boat motor is not getting any power and the battery is fine (I metered it). Please tell me how to manually adjust this thing up so I can put it on Craigslist... At this point I don't care what i get for the Boat...

Re: Vaseline in the winter?

a1akeywest,
You hit the nail on the head for the most part. It is a choice between the "text book" way and something else.

I had tried every wax and polish/restorer I could find to no avail. I was just about to start 8 to 10 hours of wet sanding, with a back-up plan of repainting if that did not come out right.

I saw a Vaseline thread and honestly thought it sounded ridiculous. I mean, who wants a slimy dirty boat just to get a darker color. However, I thought "what do I have to lose except $2 and 30 minutes of my time?" You can always wash it off with dawn dish soap and start over if you don't like it.

I tried the Vaseline and could not have been more pleasantly surprised. The boat is not slimy or greasy at all and it sure is dark and shiny. ...and it lasts many months and I am in salt water 90% of the time. Many of my friends thought I had repainted it.

Anyway, after I tried it, the choice was easy for me and my 26 year old boat. I don't think it is the best way for everyone. However, it sure is great for my particular situation, as well as many others.

I do disagree with the "natural way". There is nothing "natural" about gel coat.

I cant tell you how to manually raise it, but if you can lower the tongue of your trailer it might get it out of your driveway.

Re: Vaseline in the winter?

So much for staying on Topic LOL :)

Before your people make comments about vaseline use I suggest you give it a try. Try it on a small area of your boat. Wont hurt anything.

Im not sure if It has been mentioned but it prevents hard water spots on my boat. Unlike SD my boat wasnt oxidized or faded. I like how it give the purple on my boat a deep rich shine to it and it makes the white of my boat very bright white. Once a year I compound buff and wax but the rest of the time I give monthly vaseline treatment.

My boat slimy and dirty from vaseline is not a accurate comment. I keep my boat the cleanest possible and my wife wouldn't ride in a slimy and dirty boat.
