I have an old Slickcraft Powered with Twin 1989 Pleasurecraft I/O's. Basically this is a 4 cly 140 HP engine a Velvet Drive Transmission and lastly a Pleasurecraft Outdrive.
PROBLEM.... The Port transmission shifts in and out of forward and reverse fine. But when it gets to about 3200 RPM's it starts to slip and over rev. The oil is full and clean in the Trans. Linkage appears to shift fine Any Suggestions?

I think your clutch plates are worn out, in the velvet drive.
About $90 for parts - $ 300 for shop time.

Have you taken a look at the prop? Thats the first place to look. Loose prop nut (i dont think so), marine growth are the first things that come to mind. No transmission oil leaks or in the flywheel housing??

Re: Velvet Drive Question

Pull the dipstick on the clutch and see if it smells burnt. If it does, then the clutch is slipping, if not, then its probably the prop. If the prop, the reason its getting that high of rpm before slipping is the other engine is taking alot of the load off of it. Try powering up with the other engine in neutral and see where it slips now. That transmission, even tho it says velvet drive, is produced only for PCM. The parts only come from them. Don't call a Borg Warner dealers looking for them cause they can't get them.

Well I pulled the prop. The splines look fine. The oil looks and smells fine as well. Is it a big deal to change the plates yourself? Is there any avaialble technical guide to change them? Pulling the engine and tranny looks like no big deal. But Im not sure about how to replace the plates

Re: Velvet Drive Question

Some props have a rubber hub between the prop shaft spline portion of the hub and the blade portion.

Yes I dont see a rubber hub on this one. No sign of any slippage so I'm thinking it must be the clutch. Anyone know of any technical data on how to rebuild the clutch?
