Hi

Over the past new months, I've carried out my first ever rebuild of a 2 stroke.

I've included a 6 min basic video.

I am no engine expert so I am wondering if the engine sounds healthy. Thesound starts at approx 1:40mins

Thanks

James

You re-used the old crankshaft ( cam ) as you may have called it.---Something does not sound quite right.----Did you measure the crankshaft journals ?

Hi

I took the Crankshaft down to the places who homed and bored the new head head.
They said the crankshaft looked fine and no signs of overheating or anything.

So I didn't measure it myself.

Damn, looks like I may have to strip it back down again. I have to say I was surprised I got it firing over

It seems like on one cylinder some times with a cylinder coming and going. Also a tick perhaps an exhaust leak?
Seems to stumble like its 4 cycling. Too rich perhaps.

How did you install and torque the connecting rod caps.-----Did you follow a procedure from a proper manual ?

Yes, i followed the procedure to a T
I think it was 7lbs for the cap rod ends. I'll go and find the manual to confirm

Doing a cold compression check, both cylinders give the standard compression readings.

The manual is Johnson Service Manual 1999 EE 9.9 thru 30

The Conrod cap ends where torqued to 7 to 7.5 Nm as it says in the book.

If you dont line the cap ends up correctly it ends bad.
Try checking for bearing movement by moving pistons to TDC and then pressing in on the piston with something that wont damage the piston head. You shouldnt get much movement at all, a hairs width or so, and it should be even between cylinders

Yes, I think that's what killed it last time. Owner sold the engine as good and reliable and when i used it the cap rod end smashed up. Engine was really clean inside so it's obvious that it failed he rebuilt it and sold it on quickly.

anyway, I tried your suggestion. I couldn't feel any movement in either piston.

I know the fuel pump is faulty as after a little while you have to pump the fuel bulb or the engine will stop due to fuel starvation. So I will fix that then run her up again
