Video - 30hp Mariner - What is making this noise?

I need to move my boat here within two weeks. I really need help narrowing down what this engine noise could be so I can get her to her new dock.

There is a nasty "clunking" or "rapping" sound that seems really bad to me.

The impeller was replaced and water moves fine but, it sat for a year after that. However, it started pretty quickly. The noise seems to be coming from under the flywheel. Just does not seem to be fuel related but, I could be quite wrong.

I posted here two months ago and received no response. Hopefully, this video will help.

Thanks in advance.

Does this noise occur while in gear also?

I would take off your rope start mechanism and start it. Sounds like your chicklets for your pull start, it will run without it because its only for pull start. Hope this helps Buz

My thoughts exactly. It sounds like your pawls may have come loose under the re-coil mechanism. At least with that off you can see if it still makes the noise and perhaps see what it might be.

Is the bendix on your starter retraking? riding on the flywheel?

EXCELLENT! Thanks everyone for providing me with a clue/starting place. I will travel up there today and check out these possibilities. I will let you know as soon as I get back.

Hopefully, I won't drop any tools in the water in the process!

I really appreciate the assistance more than you can imagine.

No, it does not occur when in gear. Good call. I am afraid to run and recreate the noise for fear of further damage but, I took another video today and verified the noise DOES NOT OCCUR when in gear.

Someone told me there is an "interrupter" issue on an outboard he had and that my problem sounded similar. I have no idea if mentioning that helps anyone here.

I UPDATED THE VIDEO. Just visit the same link above but, refresh your browser. (Hit the "F5" key)

I did not pull the flywheel.
I did check to see if the starter bendix retracted atw and it does. A nice gap from the flywheel.

Thanks everyone!

Based on what I could tell in your video, I didn't think it would. These motor s are very prone to have this crank slamming while under speed, but not under load. The 40 hp's of the same vintage do the same thing when revved in neutral. I don't think you have anything wrong with your engine. Try not to make a habit of revving while in neutral though. It puts tremendous strain on the wrist pins and connecting rods.

my first thought was that its trying to drop in gear - loose cables - improper adjustment maybe -kinda hard to tell from the audio .

Thank you sxmerc,

I will never again go past idle neutral.

This is not actually relevant to this issue anymore but, about the "interrupter" that was mentioned. I assume it drops idle or something when shifted from (and to) neutral? Does this (Mariner 30hp 689E 409553) even have one of those?

I plan to take it to a pro for an evaluation before I depend on it even slightly, hopefully reducing any worries.

Thanks again for the info.

Yes, that is what I thought too. Initially, I did find the shift cable was far out of adjustment, the cable was really old and the shifter at the "helm" was difficult at best. So, I removed the shift cable at the motor and manually set for neutral, it clicked right in (engine off). After starting, I noticed (at low idle) that I had to be pretty quick on the lever to get it in gear, like shifting my bike without the clutch. I also applied slow pressure to the shift lever in each direction (wiggled) a bit to see if the symptom was reduced. Nada..

So, outside of external cables, if it were gearbox / shifting related, what components/adjustments could be suspect in making a similar noise?

Thanks..
