Vintage OB mechanic wanted

I would like to know how to locate a vintage OB mechanic. Are there people who love old OB motors out there, and have the ability to bring these old OB motors back to their former glory? Im a half decent motorcycle mechanic, Love motorcycles. I have a 1959 Evinrude 35 Golden Jubille, Working on an ob engine may be a bit out of my skill range. Thanks Mitch

An outboard is just as easy (or easier) to work on than a motorcycle. Post any problems that you have in the Johnson/Evinrude forum and we'll fix you up. There are only a couple of "special" tools needed to do routine maintenance on it: A harmonic balancer puller to remove the flywheel, a compression gauge, and an adjustable gap spark tester. Most of the common tune-up parts are available here at iboats.

Thanks shipmate Whaler for your responce. The imediate problem in hand, concerns the lever that shifts the OB from forward to reverse. I obsreve a simple bolt is missing from the shift shaft. That being said i dont know how this shift lingage is supposed to work and how to bring this 2 cycle OB back on line. Get my drift? It would be a one time visit to a good OB mechanic to get this motor back on line. I will maintaine this motor after this. Wish i had the cash to get a more moderen OB. Thanks Mitch

A manual would be useful to get you started on fixing the motor. There is a lot of information here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680
If it is the shift rod coupler (the thing that joins the upper shift rod to the lower unit), then replace the missing bolt. I suspect it may be missing because the coupler could be stripped out. In that case, the PN for the coupler is 303794

If your motor cycles are 2 stroke then the concept is similar.
A omc Evinride/Johnson (mechanically the same motors)service manual will help you a lot.These motors are simple and rugged
As a kid I did very basic service with a pair of pliers and a screw driver.
New and used parts are plentiful some available right here at Iboats.
As far as finding a mechanic hang around the launch ramps strike up a conversation with the boat owners especially those with older motors. Its possible dealers that don't work on older motors may suggest a mechanic.

Thanks Steel. In the vintage motorcycle world, replacement parts are hard if not imposible to find. I.E. 1972 Kawasaki H2 750 2 stroke triple rods. I dragrace a motorcycle of this vintage. That being said since ive hooked up with the great contributors @ I Boats I now now that there are folks out there that can help me get my 1959 Evinrude Golden Jubilee 35 horse back on line. There you go.There's lots of experience here and we all are glad to add our help.
You will need a factory service manual.There are reprints available here at Iboats.
They are a little pricey but will serv you well.There are also various aftermarket manuals
that do a fairly good job.You might find them at the library.And you can find them at iboats,ebay
on cd or in print.Before major work on the 35 do a compression check.About 100 psi and even between cylinders is ideal minimum.Some motors have an automatic compression release
when hand cranked so reading may be off.You should be able to figure out a way to defeat it
or just use the starter.
