1994 Mariner 40 HP - 4 Cylinder. Serial # OD295837

In 2003, I replaced the stator with a CDI 174-9710k1. The voltage regulator is now fried. I am not sure whether the new stator caused the problem or if this is a common problem with the voltage regulator. The VR is totally burnt.

I have a huge crew coming up to the lake this weekend and need the pontoon running.

Question: What is the purpose of the voltage regulator? Can it be temporarily bypassed to cover me for the weekend? When I do replace the voltage regulator, should I use the CDI aftermarket or the Mariner OEM part?

Re: VOLTAGE REGULATOR FRIED

I'm pretty sure that the only problem this would cause you is the engine will not charge your battery. If you take along a good backup battery you should be ok. If I'm wrong someone will correct me. The CDI unit is superior to OEM.

Re: VOLTAGE REGULATOR FRIED

Thanks for the quick reply.
If it is ok to bypass the voltage regulator , how do I go about bypassing it??

In the wiring diagram, there are two yellow wires coming from the stator to the voltage regulator. There are two red wires coming from the voltage regulator to the starter solenoid. There is also a gray wire coming from the VR to the electrical connector.

With the previous wiring info., any ideas on how I go about bypassing the VR ?

Thanks

Re: VOLTAGE REGULATOR FRIED

If that is only problem, you should not have to do anything. It should run with regulator out but I would get a replacement asap.

OK,
I am not sure which CDI Part # I need for the voltage regulator.
With the above model and serial # info, which CDI part do I need.

Is it the 194-5279 or the 194-3072 ??

I am still confused about the yellow wires coming off the stator. Don't I need to terminate them ??

Re: VOLTAGE REGULATOR FRIED

It is my understanding that the gray wire goes to the tachometer. The two red wires; one goes to the ignition switch, the other goes to the battery for charging. The two yellow wires come from the stator.

As far as terminating the two yellow wires...they are used for powering the tach and battery charging. Someone with more insight and knowledge should answer that question.

Not positive (pardon the pun) but I believe the device with the yellow (AC) wires going to it is the rectifier (converts the AC to DC). This newer motor may have a regulator built in with the rectifier. Get the #194-5279 from CDI.
