Voltmeter Problem

Have a 2005 Yamaha 115 HP 4 stroke on a Hurricane Fundeck boat. Analog voltmeter gage became irratic and now does not work, so I cannot tell if alternator / generator is charging. What's the trouble shooting process??

There are only three wires on the gauge. Ground, +12 volts when the key is on and the instrument light. Either the +12 volt line or ground has become disconnected. If the instrument light works, it's the +12 volt connection. If the light doesn't work, check the ground. It is a wiring or gauge problem. Even if the charging system was not working, the voltmeter would still be measuring battery voltage.
